Spelunky 1 And 2 Dig Their Way To A Switch Release This Month

It looks like Nintendo may have missed a rather big announcement during yesterday's Indie World Direct. In a stealth update on the Switch eShop, both Spelunky and Spelunky 2 were given release dates for the very near future. The duo of legendary roguelike titles will be hitting Nintendo's platform on August 26, 2021.

The date was first spotted by the Australian site Vooks.net before being corroborated by Eurogamer for the UK eShop. A search on your console will find the US pages for both, with Spelunky going for $9.99 and Spelunky 2 going for $19.99. Shortly after these findings, developer Mossmouth confirmed the date on Twitter. It's almost like users played a game of Spelunky to uncover this wonderful treasure… or my metaphor is really flimsy.

I've never managed to finish Spelunky, but the game is an absolute delight when it comes to roguelikes. Ridiculously tough, but always rewarding, it absolutely captures that sensation of being Indiana Jones narrowly avoiding death traps. It gets a bit strange by the end (a little supernatural, if you will), but the endless amount of level layouts will keep you coming back for more time and time again.

If you don't have a Switch, Spelunky and Spelunky 2 are currently available on PC and PS4. The first game can also be had on Xbox 360, PS3, and PS Vita, giving you plenty of options for grabbing your pickaxe and digging for gold. Just be ready to pull your hair in frustration when you die two levels from the end.
