Steven Bignell’s Incredible & Gorgeous Cosplay Brings Heroes and Monsters to Life

The Work of Steven Bignell

We’re bringing you the weekly COGconnected cosplay feature in a very tumultuous moment. At this point, you guys have probably realized that we love cosplay. Photographs, tutorials, even convention recordings, whatever form it takes. However, we also love using our cosplay articles to bring attention to brilliant cosplayers who might also be disadvantaged minorities. With Canada Day upon us and in the wake of some very unfortunate discoveries concerning Canadian Residential Schools, we’ve decided to put the spotlight on Steven Bignell from Opaskwayak Cree Nation, located in Northern Manitoba. As a self-taught artist with over 25 years of costume-making behind him, Steven Bignell has some amazing costumes under his belt. And as if that wasn’t enough, he’s also a filmmaker who’s created some great fan films over the years, too.

Steven Bignell worked on the short horror film Black Ice in 2019, which premiered at the Storytellers’ Film Festival in The Pas, and is now hard at work on a series of short Second World War films about an Indigenous Canadian soldier. When he’s not working on original film projects, he pieces together some incredible Halloween costumes ranging from full KISS cosplay to an incredibly intricate Predator outfit. He uploaded a compilation video of 19 years worth of fantastic cosplay to YouTube. The results will take your breath away.

You can check out the video on the next page. In the meantime, we’d like to share with you some of our cosplay features from our favorite cosplay features posted this past year:
