Supergiant’s Hades Wins First-Ever Hugo Award for Best Video Game

Hades Literally Can’t Stop Winning Awards

As if the Hugo awards adding this category wasn’t cool enough, they chose an excellent title to give it to. Hades’ reception has been stellar and almost unanimously positive. The game beat out Last of Us Part 2 and the Final Fantasy 7 remake, among others. Some viewers found the nomination of Animal Crossing: New Horizons a bit strange, disputing whether the game counted as either sci-fi or fantasy. But either way, that title didn’t walk home with a win. As for Hades, well, you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone upset by this news.

Hades is a critically-acclaimed roguelike that follows Zagreus’ many, many attempts to escape the underworld.

This is an immense honor for our team. Not only are the #hugoawards a true legend in fantasy and science fiction, this is the first year that the awards are recognizing the video game category. Thank you so much, and we salute all our wonderful fellow nominees! https://t.co/sgGVMFXeWi

Greg Kasavin, creative director at Supergiant games and writer of Hades, couldn’t be present at the official Hugo event to deliver a speech. He did, however, make one for social media, which means it’s available for all to see. The full speech can be found here.

“I’m so grateful to all my collogues at Supergiant games who made hades possible.” Greg said at the tail-end of the speech. “It is fundamentally a team effort.”

Funnily enough, this isn’t even the first time Hades has received this kind of award. A while back, it picked up the 2020 Nebula Award for game writing. There’s so many reasons to love Hades, but if you’re a fan of game writing, there’s no reason not to check it out. Any game that’s left an impact this strong has got to be something special!
