Sense/s: Midnight

Suzaku Games have announced Sense/s: Midnight; the first in an anthology of shorter games set after Sense: A Cyberpunk Ghost Story.

We previously reported how Suzaku Games teased an upcoming project by revealing a new character- Uesugi Kaho. It was not clear at the time whether she would appear in a new game, or new content for Sense: A Cyberpunk Ghost Story.

As stated in the press release (via email) Kaho will appear in Sense/s; an anthology series set after the events of Sense: A Cyberpunk Ghost Story. These will be six shorter and smaller scale individual games (around 1 to 2 hours of gameplay), focused on feedback from the original to improve some aspect of the game’s design or art with each project.

Each will be released digitally on Windows PC and Nintendo Switch, with two to three games released every year, and a four to six month development cycle per game. Each game aims to sell for $5 USD to $10 USD; though Suzaku Games “are still pricing things out a bit and researching carefully!”

Uesugi Kaho will be the protagonist for the first game in this anthology; Sense/s: Midnight. Kaho is a college student returning home to Japan to visit family, when her college occult research club dares her to investigate a famous urban legend; The Midnight Door of Ikebukuro Walking Park.

Being “much more aggressive and outgoing than Sense’s Mei,” she jumps at the opportunity. However, entering the long abandoned park just before 12:00 a.m. and opening the Midnight Door may be the worst mistake she will ever make.

The game’s Japanese location means players will see more inspirations from Japanese horror than Cantonese horror (as seen in Sense), along with their futuristic version of Japan.

Suzaku Games note they had even planned to take a vacation in Japan, but were unable to due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic restrictions. “Consider this game our way of coping with the travel restrictions!” Suzaku Games state.

Sense/s: Midnight will also be in full 3D. The game is in early development at the pre-alpha stage, and the game is currently intended to have fixed camera angles and “possibly (probably)” tank controls. Suzaku Games state they “want to push the game even closer to it’s Fatal Frame inspiration;” even if these smaller games will have gameplay akin to Clock Tower and Sense.

This means players will hide from a singular ghostly enemy while completing puzzles. Based on prior feedback, Suzaku Games aim to make the ghost a much greater threat, and to amp up the tension and scare-factor with Sense/s: Midnight.
