The Biggest Gaming News For August 20 – 27: Gamescom, Dr Disrespect, And Bethesda

Gamescom may have dominated headlines for the week of August 20 – 27, but those weren’t the only top stories going on. This past week saw the announcement of a radically different type of Marvel game, Dr Disrespect attempting to stay relevant, Microsoft announcing a special edition Series X, and Bethesda reaching out to its community to get a modder hired. It’s a veritable smorgasbord of gaming news!

Corpse Husband Hits One Million Viewers On Twitch After Two Streams

As you are likely aware, streaming on Twitch can be an incredibly lucrative venture for those that hit it big. While many struggle to get a foothold in the incredibly crowded space, it seems musician Corpse Husband was able to smash some records on his second ever stream. A little over a week ago, Husband amassed one million total viewers to his stream while playing co-op shooter Back 4 Blood.

Husband has previous experience with gaming content seeing as he has a YouTube channel. With over seven million subscribers, it was no wonder his Twitch channel blew up. There's a massive difference between scripted, edited videos and live streaming, however. When asked by Dexerto how he dealt with that divide, Husband said, "I think it's good for me (streaming) every now and then because it forces me to become very uncomfortable."

Marvel's Midnight Suns Announced At Gamescom From Developers of XCOM

Gamescom 2021 didn't have much in the way of massive surprises, but there was one particular title that captured people’s interest: Marvel's Midnight Suns. A darker take on the Marvel heroes that have wedged their way into pop culture over the last decade+, the most fascinating thing about this title isn't that you'll be able to control your favorite characters. You can also date them!

Developed by Firaxis, best known for XCOM and Civilization, the game will be a tactical RPG with social elements sprinkled in for team bonding. Featuring the likes of Wolverine, Iron Man, Dr. Strange, and Ghost Rider, it certainly sounds much more interesting than the safer games coming from Square Enix. I'm ready for ambitious and unique takes versus MCU-adjacent fluff.

Halo Infinite Gets A Custom Themed Xbox Series X This November

It likely shouldn't come as a surprise to fans of Halo, but Microsoft announced during Gamescom that the upcoming Halo Infinite would be getting a customed themed Xbox Series X this fall. Launching on November 15, 2021, the console comes roughly a month before Infinite's launch and features a mechanical-looking paint scheme that is topped with gold accents and a spacey top. It also has a matching controller, though it's not the Halo Infinite Elite Series 2 gamepad.

Pre-orders went live shortly after the unveiling of this console and are pretty much gone now. There are bound to be more opportunities to grab one in the coming months, not to mention stores should have stock of a few units that weren't reserved. You'll need to be diligent in looking these next few months if you're looking to add this console to your household.

Dr Disrespect Is Suing Twitch For Permanently Banning Him Last Year

It's been a little over a year since controversial streamer Dr Disrespect was permanently banned from Twitch. While fans of his still don't know the ultimate reason for his removal from the platform, Disrespect hasn't taken his ban lying down. Having grown a new fanbase over on YouTube, Disrespect responded to a fan inquiry on one of his streams about the Twitch ban and stated that he would be suing the platform over it.

Legally barred from explaining more, Disrespect claims he knows why Twitch banned his account. I'm not sure how he thinks he’ll win a lawsuit, especially considering he was temporarily banned in 2019 for breaking the law by streaming in the bathroom at the LA Convention Center during E3. If Twitch couldn't permanently ban him then, there has to be a very good reason why he's been removed now.

Bethesda Hires Head Writer Of Fallout London Mod

Bethesda may have stumbled around with the Fallout IP for years, but fans have kept the dream of the original two Interplay titles alive through ambitious mods. One such is the upcoming Fallout London mod, a total conversion of sorts for Fallout 4 that shifts the setting outside of the United States. Making waves in June thanks to a rather polished reveal trailer, Fallout London's writer recently left the project as she was hired by Bethesda to contribute to some unnamed titles.

Revealed in the Discord server for Fallout London, lead writer Stephanie Zachariadis (aka Siren) has left the project to join Bethesda. Currently employed as an associate quest designer, it could be that her passion for Fallout has carried her to an official Fallout title. It’s likely she’ll be contributing quests to Fallout 76 as Bethesda still regularly updates it with new content.
