The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience has been found hidden away on the the back end of the PlayStation Store. It seems to be only for PlayStation 5.

The Matrix Awakens

Unfortunately it does seem to be one of those interactive things to promote the forthcoming movie rather than a full game, rather a shame as the original Xbox and PS2 Matric games were rather wonderful.

Enter the Matrix was released in 2003, developed by Shiny Entertainment and published by Infogrames. The story ran concurrently with that of the film The Matrix Reloaded and included over an hour of original footage, written and directed by the Wachowskis and starring the cast of the films. The game also a sequence explaining why The Orcal changed her appearance between the second and third films, and like the Animatrix, the games are part of the Matrix cannon.

A MMO, The Matrix Online, ran from 2005 to 2009, whilst 2005’s The Matrix: Path of Neo allowed players to control Neo in key scenes from the three movies. That was the last we heard of Neo, although you may remember the PS4 Pro was codenamed Neo and PSVR was originally Project Morpheus.

A new trailer for The Matrix Resurrections was released just two days and it’s certainly generated hype for the movie. Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) are returning but as (Spoilers) they died in the third film it’s been unclear how they have returned. The latest trailer clearly states “maybe this isn’t the story we think it is”, and we can also hear a character saying “Why use old code for something new?” Is this a hint that Neo and Trinity aren’t actually returning at all and the whole thing is yet another simulation?

The Matrix Resurrections will be released on 22nd December 2021 so we expect The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience to be released just before then. It might even reveal a few secrets!
