The Witcher Fan Comes Up With Awesome Prequel Game Concept

CD Projekt Red’s beloved The Witcher series is made up of several open-world fantasy RPGs. The games follow the lead character and witcher Geralt of Rivia as he hunts down monsters across the land known as The Continent, interacting with various sorceresses, barons, and kings along the way. Based on books by Polish novelist Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher is known for its dark, sprawling medieval world, grey morality, and engaging characters.

With the most recent title in the series, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, having first launched all the way back in 2015, eager fans are waiting for news on where the franchise is going to go next. While no official announcement has been made regarding The Witcher 4, that hasn’t stopped the series' passionate fan base from theorizing what could be next for the series, whether it be a direct sequel to the third game or something else entirely.

Inspired members of Reddit’s Witcher community have begun discussing what they think is best for the popular monster hunting franchise. One particular user, fakemandarin, has pitched his unique idea to other fervent fans. He believes that the “Golden Age of Witchers” would be a perfect setting for a prequel game that he has tentatively titled: The Witchers: Golden Age.

“The Golden Age of Witchers” or “The Second Era” refers to a time in Witcher lore where the monster hunters from the five Witcher schools all stopped fighting each other and instead began diligently and efficiently completing their work. Witchers became plentiful and organized, nearly eradicating all monsters on The Continent. They eventually became the monsters themselves in the public’s eye, with there being no creatures left to hunt.

The idea of a prequel Witcher game set during the golden age is certainly an intriguing one. In the three mainline games released so far, Witchers are quite rare in the world. It could be incredibly engaging to pick one of the five schools to train with while players compete against or work with other wandering Witchers out in the world. Netflix is also working on a prequel Witcher series to run alongside its mainline adaptation starring Henry Cavill.

Of course, it would be hard to leave behind the series’ incredible characters like protagonist Geralt of Rivia and Ciri, among countless others. Still, the idea of a prequel in a different age and setting is an engaging one. With Netflix’s The Witcher adaptation launching its second season this December and focusing on the franchise's notable characters, maybe a new game could branch off and try something uniquely different like “The Golden Age”, working as a spin-off rather than a mainline title.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is available on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
