This Week In Final Fantasy XIV: Server Woes, The Rising, And Quizzes

Another week, another round-up for Eorzeans. Final Fantasy 14’s Endwalker expansion is now just 84 days away—yes, I’m keeping count—but that doesn’t mean things aren’t just as busy as usual. In the lead up to version 6.0, Square Enix has kept its focus on relieving server congestion while keeping up with a steady stream of in-game events. Whether you’re more interested in chasing the MMO’s achievements or keeping up with its impressive community feats, this week’s collection of stories has a little bit of everything.

Aether Data Center Temporarily Closes

If you were hoping to join friends in Final Fantasy 14’s most popular data center, Square Enix doesn’t have very good news. Aether is closed right now for character creation, so you'll have to begin your journey elsewhere. Director and producer Naoki Yoshida delivered another apologetic but transparent blog to the community this week detailing just how intense server congestion is for the European and North American Data Centers. There’s no easy solution, either. Yoshida says the team is doing its best, but asks for patience while they look for solutions during the pandemic and hardware shortages.

Eorzeans Help Out

The Japanese Data Centers aren’t to be forgotten, either. Square Enix noted that it has enough data on the European and North American situation, but it wants to conduct a little more for players on the Mana Data Center. This Friday, the team will conduct a stress test and they’re asking the realm’s Warriors of Light to participate. If you have a free moment and want to help out Mana, Yoshida will hold a live stream tomorrow detailing the how-to.

Honor The Rising’s 8th Year

Once a year, Final Fantasy 14’s community embarks on a quest chain that pays tribute to the lives lost during the game’s Seventh Umbral Calamity. It’s a bit of a bittersweet occasion, as characters celebrate Eorzea’s deliverance from the disaster with festivities, but mourn those who didn’t see the cataclysmic event through. The latest festival actually begins today, and you’ll get the Red Moon Parasol and Nymeia Potpourri for participating.

Find Your True Calling

Japan’s chain of Lawson convenience stores is collaborating with Final Fantasy 14 and giving away an adorable King Porxie mount. There’s no word on how those of you on European and North American servers can get it just yet, but don’t worry about it too much—Square Enix often finds other ways to deliver Japanese events to fans around the world. Until then, you can still check out this cute job quiz fans from all over have been sharing from the collaboration. The auto-translate may be a little rough, but you get the picture. It didn’t give me Scholar, so I’m a bit ill over it.

A Little Yu-Gi-Oh With Your Final Fantasy

Final Fantasy 14’s community continues to impress, but this latest achievement combined the game’s card-wielding class with an actual Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Disk controller. As spotted by Kotaku, Twitch streamer Super Louis 64 managed to rig the device with hardware he built, using it to control his Astrologian in Final Fantasy 14. The class is often regarded as Eorzea’s most difficult healer to play, so props to him for making it work.
