Trek to Yomi gameplay trailer shows off stylish samurai action

Devolver Digital has released a new Trek to Yomi gameplay trailer, giving us a closer look at the upcoming samurai saga.

The stylish action platformer has no confirmed release date but is expected to launch in 2022 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Trek to Yomi will also feature on Xbox Game Pass to the delight of subscribers.

Clearly influenced by chambara (sword-fighting samurai movies), this new game comes from Leonard Menchiari and Shadow Warrior studio, Flying Wild Hog. In Trek to Yomi you play as young samurai, Hiroki, who goes up against the armies of evil against a backdrop of gorgeous historic settings.

There’s more to the trailer than just a well-timed few katana swipes. We also get to see Hiroki traverse and explore 3D environments, and hopefully there will be some challenging platforming and puzzler elements in the full game.

Of course, the main focus here is the look and flow of swordfights. Trek to Yomi will feature an intuitive yet straightforward combat system that weaves together deliberate strikes, parries, blocks, and dodge rolls. Here are some other key elements the game will include:

Cinematic Presentation
Breathtaking camera angles and striking visuals in the spirit of classic samurai film create a true cinematic experience in Trek to Yomi.

Stylish Combat
Engage vicious swordsmen and supernatural beings with a streamlined combat system based around the traditional weapons of the samurai.

Mythic Storytelling
Experience an enthralling story of Hiroki during his fall against the forces of evil and heroic return to make good on his failed promise to save the people he swore to protect.

Thrilling Soundtrack

The thrilling action and somber moments are set against a memorable score designed to feel authentic to the time and place of feudal Japan.

There’s clearly an appetite for samurai video games, as evidenced by Ghost of Tsushima’s roaring success. Earlier this year, the PlayStation exclusive launched on PS5 with a new Director’s Cut that added the Iki Island DLC.
