Sonic Colors Ultimate Soundtrack Drops September 29

Sega of Japan announced that the official Sonic Colors Ultimate soundtrack, titled Recolors, will be available on September 29.

According to a statement published on Sonic Channel yesterday, the soundtrack will feature newly remixed and remastered tracks from the original 2010 game. The opening theme, Reach for the Stars, has been re-recorded with a new arrangement, and the ending theme, Speak With Your Heart, has been remixed with future bass and trap instrumentation dubbed the Rainbow Mix.

In case you need to refresh your memory about the remix of the Sonic Colors opening theme, Tomoya Ohtani and his band performed the studio version of Reach for the Stars (Re-Colors) during the Sonic 30th Anniversary Symphony concert last month. He tweeted the video of the symphony to start at his portion of the performance along with the announcement of the Sonic Colors Ultimate: Recolors soundtrack.

Additionally, the original version of the Sonic Colors theme song and its orchestra will be re-recorded as a remastered sound source. The rest of the tracks from the action stages and boss battle stages will be remixed with all manner of arrangements and additional recordings.

The Recolors soundtrack will also feature new tracks from the new Rival Mode, as well as some Genius-style variety commentary from the remixers in the album booklet.

"Enjoy the musicality of this album," Sega wrote in the statement. "It's a colorful mix of elements, like pop, rock, and dance."

Sonic Colors Ultimate is the first Sonic remaster to receive a soundtrack with remixes of all the original songs. The Sonic Generations soundtrack remixed a medley of only the most popular tracks from across the Sonic the Hedgehog series.

While the Sonic Colors Ultimate: Recolors soundtrack will be a musical delight to many Sonic fans, my ears begged to differ to Sega's statement on the inclusion of rock. The original Sonic Colors soundtrack featured more pop and dance sounds and less rock riffs, which may be heard in Asteroid Coaster. The pop and dance elements that echoed all over Sonic Colors, with a dash of electronic at times, was the popular musical staple of the 2010s — or at least the early part of the decade. The minimal presence of rock music in the game was profound, considering that it's Sonic's favorite musical genre, especially during the Sonic Adventure era.

Sonic Colors Ultimate: Recolors will be released on CD and digital and streaming services on September 29. The game itself will be released September 7 on PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.
