What is Metroid Dread? A closer look at Nintendo Switch’s new 2.5D adventure

Metroid Dread

While Nintendo continues to work on Metroid Prime 4, Mercury Steam will release a new game in October with gameplay comparable to the originals. It’s called Metroid Dread. We have some early details!

During the E3 Nintendo Direct, Nintendo revealed Metroid Dread, a new entry in the series that would use a 2.5D approach (i.e. polygonal visuals but classic 2D gameplay). It will be available for Nintendo Switch on October 8, 2021.

It will have a new environment and will take place after the Game Boy Advance classic Metroid Fusion. The studio has also stated that its promised Metroid Prime 4 is still in the works, but no new material has been released for this game, which was restarted a few years ago.

More about Dread

Metroid Dread is the direct sequel to Metroid Fusion, which was published almost twenty years ago back in 2002. Dread finishes the five-part narrative based on the unusual relationship between bounty hunter Samus and the Metroids, which began with the original NES Metroid game. In this episode, Samus travels alone to a mysterious and isolated planet, where she becomes the target of a new mechanical threat: the E.M.M.I. robots.

Players will be able to return to previously explored regions to find new regions and secret upgrades as they earn abilities, in traditional Metroid style. The game will provide both new and classic abilities for traversing the world’s environments. Sliding, parkour over barriers, and counter-attacks will all aid in our survival on the planet.

On the same day as the game’s release, Metroid Dread: Special Edition will come out. It contains the game, a SteelBook, a 190-page illustrated book of the 2D Metroid saga. It also includes five cards featuring the covers of all five games in the saga.

Finally, a Metroid Dread amiibo set is coming out on the same day as the game. It includes a figure of Samus in her Metroid Dread attire and an amiibo figure of E.M.M.I.
