The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles is a huge compilation, containing two full-fat Ace Attorney titles that will take you hours to make your way through. This is the first of several interactions you'll have with Herlock Sholmes, but it's under quite unfortunate circumstances you find yourself in.

In this chapter, Naruhodo Ryunosuke is once again accused of murder – twice in a short span of time – and it is once again down to you to investigate the evidence and prove your innocence. The last chapter was essentially a tutorial for how trials work, and this chapter acts as an introduction to investigations. You'll be analysing the crime scene and chatting to witnesses in order to get a good idea of what happened, and in most cases you'll later bring your found evidence and witnesses into the courtroom. Here though, you'll just be focused on the investigation.
This is a long sequence and there are a lot of things to analyse in each section, but as a general rule you should always analyse everything in a new area, and double check for new things to analyse when re-entering an older area. The icon will change when hovering over something you can inspect, and will indicate whether or not there is new information to be found through analysing.
The Unbreakable Speckled Band: What Happened To Kazuma?
Naruhodo Ryunosuke will be pulled from a wardrobe by Herlock Sholmes, as the only person in the cabin with the victim. The door to the room was locked tight from the inside, and sadly, Kazuma has died. Things will start off with a lot of exposition, and a lot of NPCs grilling Naruhodo. Kazuma hid Naruhodo as a stowaway in his cabin in order to take him to Great Britain, but things have gone terribly wrong.
You'll be given several dialogue options to investigate matters with NPCs – you should always go through each and every choice. There are no wrong answers, and some choices will open up new options. When Susato asks for evidence that you didn't do it, Present the Paper Seal that Kazuma used to lock the wardrobe. Kazuma put it there, and it would've came off if Naruhodo opened the door after that – therefore, he can't be the killer.
Once given the option, it's time to examine the crime scene. Examine everything in the room, including speaking with the Sailor, the air vent, the knocked over books, and the desk. You'll eventually see Herlock Sholmes on top of the desk, and you'll be able to talk with him. Exhaust his dialogue options. Following this conversation, another sailor will appear in the room – and wouldn't you know it, it's Satoru Hosonaga again, the detective from the previous case. Exhaust his dialogue options too to find out that he's undercover once again. Present to him Kazuma's diary that you read earlier. This will convince Hosonaga that you must investigate outside of this room, and will activate the Move function. You can now move into the First-Class Passageway.
The Unbreakable Speckled Band: First-Class Passageway, Cabin No. 2
In the First-Class Passageway, you can speak Strogenov, the guard of the First-Class quarters. You can chat to him and exhaust his dialogue options and examine everything nearby. Be sure to investigate everything in the room, and then investigate the door to the room next to Kazuma's. Unfortunately, it's locked. Luckily, Herlock will burst in and decide to kick the door down – the absolute mad lad.
Inside you'll find a stereotypical Russian man, Roylott, in a room with is very similar to Kazuma's. Be sure to fully examine everything you can in the room, including the books, knocked over in the same way as Kazuma's. Now, we get to see Herlock's incredible deductive skills.
Herlock Sholmes will make several assumptions about Roylott, but most of them will be a bit… wrong. Luckily Naruhodo is on the ball, and can interject to solve each of them. Here are the solutions to the first Deduction:
First, make sure to examine the newspaper in the Court Record, and look at the article about the missing ballerina, adding it to the Court Record. Herlock will assert that the scissors are to shear Roylott's beard, but instead, move the camera around Roylott and inspect his long blonde hair coming out from underneath. That's what Roylott was going to cut.
Next, Herlock asserts that Roylott is the revolutionary mentioned in the paper – nonsense, of course. The long golden hair points towards the ballerina on the back of the paper – Present the Article About Ballerina. Roylott will remove his – or, her – wig to reveal that, yes, she is the young ballerina Pavlova.
Next is her crime. Herlock will say she keeps glancing at her suitcase, but no, it's actually the tiara on the desk, behind the suitcase.
But she's actually looking at something else entirely – the Rules of Passage, which state that pets and animals are not allowed aboard the ship, explaining why the suitcase is moving. It has a creature inside, of course. With that, Nikolina Pavlova has been uncovered – next we have to find out what she has to do with this case.
Exhaust your dialogue options with Pavlova, and then Present Kazuma's diary, specifically the passage about the speckled band. This will conclude this portion of the chapter.
The Unbreakable Speckled Band: Pavlova's Cabin
Return to Kazuma's cabin, and speak with Hosonaga. He's been beaten for releasing Naruhodo from the cabin – what a champ. Exhaust his dialogue options, and Hosonaga will also give you the results of Kazuma's autopsy. Once we've got everything we can out of Hosonaga, let's head back into the First-Class Passageway.
Strogonov is gone, and Sholmes is investigating the log book which records everyone going in and out of the First-Class quarters. A large portion of the log book is blank, indicating that Strogonov was not at his post at some point last night. Since everyone seems to have left, head inside Cabin No. 2 to investigate what Miss Pavlova has left behind.
Examine everything in the room – though unfortunately, the suitcase from before has been opened, and is now empty. Make sure to examine the books at the back so Susato tidies them again. As you finish up, sirens will blare, and the engines will be cut, causing the ship to suddenly brake. The entire vessel will tilt and tumble, making things and people fall over – but most importantly, the books have fallen, and the bolt on the door has slid shut.
Once things have calmed, Strogonov and Hosonaga will burst in, along with Pavlova. After a bit of chaos, and the introduction of a snake, Herlock will once again begin a Deduction. Here's how to solve his mis-matched evidence.
First, Pavlova will be staring at her hand longingly. Why? Well, it's the scratch marks on the back of her hand.
Next, Pavlova's dear friend is not a vicious snake – it's a cute cat. Check the framed photo on the table.
Now Pavlova will be hiding something behind her back – it looks like a speckled band, but investigate it and it will undeniably be a cat toy. This is the speckled band that Kazuma saw through the ventilator. The photograph of Pavlova and the cat will be added to the Court Record.
Now to solve exactly how Kazuma died. First, Present the Post-Mortem Report, which specifies that there were no wounds on Kazuma's body.
When examining the crime scene, look at the mark on the floor next to the broken glass. This is shoe polish, which indicates that Kazuma slipped and fell.
Now to find how Pavlova is involved – when investigating near the suitcase, look behind the chair to find the wastepaper basket. This bin has some broken glass in which matches that in Kazuma's room.
Finally, to prove she knows of the bell, present the photograph of her and the cat once more – the broken glass is the bell the cat had on its collar. This solves Herlock's second Deduction.
The Unbreakable Speckled Band: The Final Mysteries Solved
Now that the Deduction is out of the way, there's one final concern. Kazuma's death wasn't an accident, and the evidence which proves that is the Crime Scene Photograph, which had Kazuma writing in Russian, despite being Japanese, and dying instantly.
When looking for the other piece of evidence which proves it wasn't a mistake, present the Mark on the Floor. The glass here, and the fact the other half is with Pavlova, proves it cannot be a mistake.
Finally, there's the case of the locked door – but you already know how this happened, right? The emergency siren was sounded, which caused a sudden stop, toppling books from the bookcases, and locking doors in the process. Point out the bookcase as proof of how the door locked.
As for proof of the fact there was some kind of emergency? Well, that's the Ship's Log, of course, which Strogonov declined to fill out during the evening.
Once all this is done, Strogonov will essentially confess to helping hide Kazuma's death, even if it were an accident. You will need a final piece of evidence though, which you can find in the purple stain on the bottom rear of Strogonov's shirt. Pair it with the Crime Scene Photograph, and it becomes obvious that it is the ink used to write the Russian message.
There's one last thing to uncover – in the Crime Scene Photograph, Kazuma's left hand is balled into a fist – why didn't he stop himself from falling? In his hand is an earring. If you investigate Pavlova's left ear, you'll see she has the exact same earring, but it's missing from her right ear. She was definitely in the room when Kazuma fell.
Pavlova tells everything as it happened. Kazuma found out her identity, and she panicked, assuming he was going to turn her in. In reality, he was going to consult with Naruhodo – a misunderstanding that seemingly cost him his life. This solves The Adventure Of The Unbreakable Speckled Band, and the second chapter of the game.
