Valheim’s Hearth And Home Update Overhauls Food Systems

Valheim Hearth And Home 2 Via Steam

Hearth and Home is still on schedule to arrive before the end of the summer, according to Iron Gate, and to get all you Vikings in the mood, they've embarked on a series of video spotlights that will showcase various aspects of the coming update.

Yesterday's video was all about food. Specifically, how Valheim's food system will be overhauled in Hearth and Home to offer a greater variety of effects.

Currently, most foods in Valheim offer a roughly equal amount of health and stamina once consumed. This will change somewhat in Hearth and Home with foods falling into three general categories. Each category is marked by a colored fork icon: red means more health than stamina, yellow means more stamina than health, and white means equal amounts of health and stamina.

Additionally, Hearth and Home will remove the food bar and replace it with timers showing how much time is left on each consumed item. This will let players know more precisely when they need to eat, and combined with the colored fork categories, will let Vikings plan how they want to approach their sessions. Eating something with a lot of stamina will be great for low-impact construction days, whereas adventuring out of the home might need something with equal amounts of stamina and health.

PC Gamer spotted some changes to your favorite foods, too. Cooked meat will go from providing 70 health and 40 stamina to just 50 health and 10 stamina. Blood pudding will go from 90 health and 50 stamina to 14 health and 70 stamina, while turnip stew will go from 50 health and 60 stamina to 14 health and 70 stamina.

The video showcases a few new items too, such as black soup, boar jerky, and wolf jerky. You can add that to Eyescream, Shocklate smoothies, and "wolf meats'' mentioned in a previous preview.

Meal timers are going to change as well. Cooked Lox meat will last 20 minutes instead of 33.3 minutes, while blood pudding will last 25 minutes instead of 40. Eurogamer noted a recent Reddit thread where an Iron Gate dev confirmed that the timers might be shorter, but they should provide their benefits longer rather than at a constantly deteriorating rate.

Hearth and Home should be out before the end of this quarter, according to Iron Gate, and it'll bring more than just new meals. The last teaser also showed off stacks of cash and a treasure chest so you can play at being a Viking Scrooge McDuck.
