Valve Hints At Different Colours For The Steam Deck

Steam Deck In Case Final

Valve says that there's "tons of opportunity" when it comes to differently-themed and coloured Steam Decks.

PC Gamer recently had the chance to go hands-on with the Steam Deck and talk to Valve about it. One of the questions that was asked regarded different themes and colours for the Steam Deck, to which Valve said there was "tons of opportunity for it".

Valve product designers Tucker Spofford and Greg Coomer said, "There was a lot of debate. And also genuinely fun exploration around that stuff. And even discussions like 'well, can we have lots of colours?' We had all those discussions. We are continuing to have those now.

Although the Steam Deck is only slated to appear in black at the moment, it's clear that the thought of different themes and colours has been talked about at Valve. It's not unusual for a console to launch in one limited colour, before opening up to different themes later down the line, with recent releases like the PS5 and Xbox Series both sticking to that rule and only launching in one colour.

Goomer and Spofford continued to talk about the possibility and why it hasn't happened just yet, "t's essentially like a logistics thing. Having a lot of SKUs in the market is just a lot more complicated. There isn't really a better reason than that for right now. We might do a lot more with that in the future. If this gets off the ground the way we hope it does, there's just tons of opportunity to do that later."

From the comments made here, it's clear that if the Steam Deck sells well enough and is received well, then Valve will move on to make more SKUs that feature different colours. There wasn't much more said about the potential models that we could see, but it's easy to imagine Steam Decks based on Portal, Left 4 Dead, Half-Life and Team Fortress 2, just to name a few.
