Warhammer Preview Online – Octarius Mission Briefing

Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team Octarius

Games Workshop’s Octarius Mission Briefing preview stream has shown off a wide range of new models and supplemental material coming soon for Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team.

On Friday, Games Workshop released an impressive trailer showing a squad of Death Korps Guardsmen fighting some Ork Kommandos. This trailer was the first peek at the brand new edition of Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team, a smaller scale skirmish game set in the 40k universe that originally came to the tabletop back in 2018.

You can find the new reveal trailer below.

This new edition will be heralded by the Octarius two-player starter box. This limited run boxed set contains everything you need to get into the new edition of Kill Team; including Death Korps of Krieg Guardsmen, Ork Kommandos, rulebook, an Octarius introduction manual, dice, combat and measuring gauges, Tactical Ops cards, tokens, game board, and lots of Orky terrain to form your battlefield.

The plastic Death Korps of Krieg miniatures contain tons of options to create a full squad of 10 Guardsmen. You’ll be able to build a variety of specialists, including a sergeant, medic, demolitions expert, coms operator, and more.

Meanwhile, the plastic Ork Kommandos come with an equally wide range of options. Some of these include a Boss Nob with Power Klaw, a door breacher, a Burna, a bomb Squig, a sneaky Grot with a grappling hook, and more. All of which sport a characterful ’80s special ops action hero motif like the old resin models.

While many of these options are designed with Kill Team‘s specialist operators in mind, there isn’t anything stopping you from adding the new models to your Imperial Guard and Ork armies in the full game.

The Kill Team starter box is also the prelude to War Zone Octarius Book 1: Rising Tide, the next major narrative supplement for 40k. Like the War Zone Caradon books before it, the Octarius series will contain lots of new fluff, missions and scenarios, Armies of Renown, and codex supplements. The next codex in line is the highly anticipated Ork book, and Games Workshop showed off the rest of the new units and updated kits coming alongside it. You can check out the Rigs, Squigs, and Whirligigs below.

The Kill Rig is the big centerpiece war machine for the new Beast Snagga Ork sub-kultur, and consists of a gigantic gun platform being hauled into battle by a rhino-like Tramplasquig. In addition to being covered in heavy weapons and Beast Snagga Boyz carrying wicked scrap polearms, the top of the rig contains a platform from which a Wurrboy hurls bolts of pure Waaagh! energy across the battlefield.

The Kill Rig can also be assembled as a Hunta Rig; which replaces the volatile Wurrboy and his tower with a massive harpoon launcher for snagging particularly large beasts or enemy war machines.

Beast Snagga tribes are led by hulking Beastbosses, enormous Orks with deadly cobbled together weapons and armor, along with a shoulder-mounted shoota powered by a targeting squig.

Ork Warbosses can now take advantage of the Big ‘Ed Bossbunka, a command tower created from the severed head of a downed Gargant. From here a Warboss can look for the biggest and best fights on the battlefield, as well as bark orders to his boyz through a set of loudspeakers.

Mozgrod Skragbad is perhaps the most revered Beastboss among all the Beast Snagga tribes. This legendarily tough Beastboss managed to hunt down and “tame” the mythical Great White Squig, who he now refers to as Big Chompa.

While Mozgrod is the highlight of this new kit, it can also be assembled as a Beastboss on Squigosaur if you need a big stompy Warboss that isn’t tied to a specific clan, and want to further customize him with relics and warlord traits.

While the Beast Snaggas make up the majority of the new Ork kits coming alongside the codex, the other Orks are getting some love too. The standard Boyz are getting a shiny new kit to replace their venerable older plastic models that have been around since the ’90s.

While the new kit is packed with more detailed sculpts and weapon options, they are aesthetically close enough to the old Boyz kit that they won’t look weird fighting side-by-side in your battles.

Finally, one of the most requested Ork models is finally coming back: plastic Deffkoptas. Deffkoptas had a plastic kit as part of 5th Edition’s Assault on Black Reach box set, which has long since been out of print.

Since then, these popular Ork models have remained a rather pricy metal kit, making it difficult and expensive to field a large number of them in your armies if you can’t find some of the older plastic ones on eBay. This new plastic kit will make fielding them much easier on the wallet, and easier to transport.

Wrapping up the stream was a short teaser trailer about the Black Templars. This seems to imply they will be getting the next codex after the previously announced Ork, Thousand Sons, and Grey Knights books; though it remains to be seen if their book will be accompanied by lots of fancy new models to replace their huge range of ancient metal and resin kits. You can find the teaser trailer below.

That concludes Games Workshop’s latest online preview event. Many of these models will be released over the next few months. Which of the reveals are you most excited about? Will you be saving up for any of them in particular? Tell us what you think in the comments below!
