When is Spider-Man coming to Marvel’s Avengers?

When is Spider-Man coming to Marvel’s Avengers? Since the game launched in September 2020, Marvel fans have been excitedly waiting to play as the web slinging superhero.

However, due to the problems Marvel’s Avengers experienced when it first went live, updates and expansions were delayed and pushed further down the pipeline, including their previously announced Spider-Man DLC.

Marvel’s Avengers cross-play and 5 other improvements we need

After many of months of waiting, we’re getting closer to having Spidey join the Avengers roster as the game’s tenth playable character. It’s worth mentioning that not everyone is happy about this. Striking a deal with Sony, Square Enix have confirmed that Spider-Man will only be available on PlayStation platforms including PS4 and PS5.

When is Spider-Man coming to Marvel’s Avengers?

Right now, developer Crystal Dynamics haven’t set a firm release date for its Spider-Man expansion though he’s due to arrive by the end of 2021. According to the developer’s roadmap for Marvel’s Avengers, this will happen during the autumn or early winter.

Here’s the latest official update on Spidey’s whereabouts:

There will be a new playable Hero with a Hero Event starring Spider-Man in 2021, only on PlayStation platforms. We’ll have more information on Spider-Man closer to launch and you may catch a glimpse of him here and there along the way.

What is the Spider-Man Hero Event?

Crystal Dynamics hasn’t gone into too much detail on how Spider-Man will be implemented into Marvel’s Avengers. Instead of having his own free expansion similar to Kate Bishop, Hawkeye, and Black Panther, he will instead have his own “Hero Event”.

This could suggest something much smaller in scale, similar to the Black Widow Red Room Takeover event. The developer has confirmed that Spider-Man will have his own story and cutscenes though it doesn’t sound likely that he’ll come with new maps, enemies, villains, or other game content.

Will Spider-Man be free in Marvel’s Avengers?

Before launch, Square Enix confirmed that all additional heroes being added to Marvel’s Avengers will be free, including Spider-Man.

Once a new hero has been released, they are immediately playable via the Avengers Initiative mode. Kate Bishop, Hawkeye, and Black Panther all have their own singleplayer story missions too. It’s likely that Spider-Man may get one or two of his own missions so players can familiarise themselves with his powers and moveset. However, don’t expect something on the same scale as War for Wakanda.

Spider-Man will be completely free to play as though you’ll have to pay to unlock his Hero Challenge Card. This is basically a battle pass for each hero in the game that offers you rewards as you play and complete daily and weekly challenges. Priced at 1000 credits, each card comes loaded with 40 tiers that offer rewards such as resources, takedowns, and flashy character outfits.

Soon after launch, dataminers discovered files within the game suggesting that heroes such as Captain Marvel, Winter Soldier, Doctor Strange, and She-Hulk are currently in development.
