Windjammers 2 frisbees its way to release in January 2022

DotEmu has finally pinned a release date on Windjammers 2, the retro disc-throwing competitive sports game coming to PlayStation 4 (and PlayStation 5 via backward compatibility), Xbox One and Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Stadia and PC on 20th January. Oh, and it’ll be day and date in Xbox Game Pass.

It feels like Windjammers 2 has been in development forever, its announcement coming all the way back in 2018 during a Nintendo Direct. This was not long after the remaster of the 1994 original has made a splash with DotEmu bringing the game to PS4 and PS Vita in 2017, and then a Switch port the following year.

While originally planned for a 2019 release, the game has been repeatedly delayed to 2020, then 2021, and now early 2022, but Windjam-heads (as I’m assuming the fanbase calls themselves) are sure to be delighted with an actual release date.

Windjammers plays from the top down, with two players on a court flinging a disc back and forth, able to pull off special moves and curve shots in a game that blends tennis or pong with a fighting game. Windjammers 2 aims to take all of that to the next level.

Windjammers 2 will feature:

Miguel got to go hands on with Windjammers 2 back in early 2020, saying:

“Windjammers 2 is also set to have something that I absolutely drooled over when I first heard about it: post-launch support. The producers plan to have a steady trickle of new content to the game after it releases, from new stages and characters to seasonal events and more. Windjammers feels like the perfect game to turn into a constantly growing platform, so tacking modern DLC support onto that same, addictive disc-lobbing gameplay sounds like a recipe for success.”
