Xbox Series S Could Present Challenges For Future Titles, Says Chief Technical Officer Of 4A Games

Last year Microsoft took the unusual route of releasing two next generation consoles: the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. The Series S was on the lower end spec-wise, and priced as the cheapest of the three systems that released in 2020 as a result. Its existence has been one much talked about. It seems in general, most developers don’t see it being an issue. Now we have one more to weigh in on possible challenges down the road.

In an interview with Wccftech, Chief Technical Officer Oleksandr Shyshkovtsov of 4A Games, the developer of the popular Metro series, was asked about the Series S. Specifically, he was asked if he thought the system’s known RAM issue would be a problem. He said he didn’t think the RAM specifically was going to be an issue but that there could be challenges with the system down the road with how they develop. It seems like, for the time being, they don’t have any problems developing for the Series S, but sees potential for that to be a challenge down the road.

“The RAM is not an issue for us (currently), but GPU performance presents challenges for future titles. Our current renderer is designed for high spatial and temporal resolution. It is stochastic by nature. Dropping any of those would require us to do more expensive calculations dropping performance even further. We have a compromise solution right now, but I am not satisfied with it yet.”

The latest game from the studio, Metro Exodus, is available now, and will get a release on PS5, Xbox Series X/S as well as an enhanced version of the PC release sometime this year.
