The Xbox Series X released less than a year ago, helping to usher in the next-generation of console gaming. Recently, new info regarding sales numbers for Xbox's family of consoles has been revealed by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. According to these new details, the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S are smashing sales records, becoming the fastest selling consoles in the history of the company.
This news comes from the company's earnings call. According to estimates, the approximate amount of units sold amounts to 6.5 million. This is higher than the 5.7 million units sold by the Xbox One and 5.0 million units sold by the Xbox 360 during roughly the same amount of time. What makes these numbers even more impressive is that this comes while Microsoft continues to struggle to meet customer demand.

Beyond the new information in regards to Xbox consoles, gaming revenue over the last financial quarter increased by $357 million. According to the source, this was primarily due to the company's recent console launch. However, it was revealed that Xbox content and services revenue dropped 4% due to a lack of third-party games releasing in the previous quarter. This revenue drop was offset by growth for Xbox Game Pass along with increases in first-party game sales. With more first-party titles such as Halo Infiniteset to release in the coming months, it seems that company is poised to sell even more units moving forward.
This is good news for Microsoft it attempts to rebound after a rough stretch over the past couple console generations. Released in November of 2013, the Xbox One struggled to find its identity among the gaming community due to problems with messaging and a high price tag. While the Xbox 360 faired considerably better during its run on the market, it had to deal with problems related to malfunctioning hardware due to the Red Ring of Death. Microsoft lost major profits on Xbox 360 sales as it attempted to help unfortunate customers by extending their warranties.
Both the Series X and the Series S are Microsoft's counter to Sony's PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition. While the Series S only targets 1440p resolution gaming compared to the Series X's 4K resolution, both make strong arguments when pitted against Sony's newest consoles. The Series S retails for $300 instead of the PS5 Digital's $400.
It's been a frustrating time for fans attempting to get their hands on these new consoles over the past few months due to problems with scarcity. Who knows how many consoles Microsoft could have sold if they had the supply to meet the apparently high demand. However, they aren't the only company struggling to satisfy demand for their products. Customers are still struggling to find PS5 consoles for sale along with shortages in GPUs for gaming PCs. While the situation is expected to improve over the coming months, Intel's CEO says the shortage could continue into 2023.
