The past few years have seen a massive boom in the tabletop gaming industry – 2020 was Dungeons & Dragons’ best sales year to date, with representation in media like Stranger Things and live-play shows like Critical Role and Dimension 20 driving interest in the hobby to new heights. Of course, it was only a matter of time before game developers started to capitalize on the boom. D&D’s crunchier cousin Pathfinder saw the release of a massively successful single-player isometric RPG with Pathfinder: Kingmaker, and now developers Owlcat Games are getting ready to launch a spiritual successor with Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous.
Owlcat Games are holding steady with their vision of both the Pathfinder setting and ruleset – although a cleaned-up and streamlined Second Edition of the tabletop game was released in 2019, Wrath of the Righteous, much like Kingmaker, is based on the First Edition rules. Pathfinder is well-known for the huge amount of published content available, and plenty of it is being translated into the game. There are ten playable races, 21 playable classes with five archetypes each, and enough spells and feats to make an archmage blush. A staple of the TTRPG will also be carried over into Wrath of the Righteous – the party. You’ll be able to customize your party makeup to suit your playstyle, be it a well-rounded crew of veteran adventurers or a gang of ne’er-do-wells on a hunt for treasure.
Wrath of the Righteous is currently doing the rounds on Kickstarter, and has already amassed a mighty hoard of over $2 million. The latest developer’s update from Owlcat Games has confirmed that Wrath of the Righteous won’t just be coming to PC – just like Kingmaker, it’ll be coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions available through backwards compatibility.
Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous is currently in its second Beta phase, with a full release scheduled for September 2nd 2021.
