Ruin The World In the Palm of Your Hand

Have you ever wanted to ruin the world on the go? Well, Aspyr is here for you, in partnership with 2K, as they have brought a port of Civilization VI out on Android devices today.

Previously contained only on Apple devices, this new release exposes the most recent Civilization game to the wider Android audience on Google Play. Like the iOS version, this version of the game lets you play the first 60 turns of your game for free to try it out (and make sure your device can run it!), before asking you to pony up $19.99 to pick up the version.

“For those who love strategy games, Sid Meier’s Civilization VI is a die-hard, must-play classic that until now, wasn’t an option for Android users. That’s why we’re thrilled to announce that this epic world is now available for Android gamers to enjoy for the first time ever.” – Elizabeth Howard, vice president of publishing at Aspyr.

While calling it a die-hard, must-play classic, especially in its vanilla form, is perhaps a case of a puffery at its finest, that doesn’t change the fact that Cilivization VI is a solid entry into the series with some neat ideas that it has stolen been inspired by other games in the genre, such as how it handles districts. The game only gets better with its expansions Sid Meier’s Civilization VI Rise and Fall ($29.9 USD) and Sid Meier’s Civilization VI Gathering Storm ($39.99 USD), available to buy. For those who want to further expand the game, various scenario and leader packs will be available with prices ranging from $4.99 to $8.99. You can pick the game up here on Google Play.

Quick Take

Civiization VI isn’t my favorite in the series – that still goes to Civ 4, but it is a very fun game overall, especially with the expansions (… and mods on PC but that isn’t an option here). The delay for android probably had to do with hitting a wider array of devices with different specs, as well as the fact that, on Android pirating for paid apps is a much more common thing and has been a problem for premium devs. I think the 60 free turns offer here makes a good demo compromise of letting people feel out the game for free, before asking them to pay a fair rate – which while less then the PC and console versions fits with the device more and the fact that it is a game nearing its fourth birthday.

Also, we Canadians are definitely coming for you.
