Initial digital Hogwarts Legacy sales have greatly surpassed those of Elden Ring across Europe.

Earlier this week we reported that the Harry Potter-inspired game from Warner Bros. had a great start, nearly matching Elden Ring and New World on Steam. In addition, the game quickly became the biggest Harry Potter game launch to date.

Fast forward a few days, and GamesIndustry’s Christopher Dring now reports that digital download data for Europe has come in with impressive sales data for Hogwarts. According to Dring, the game’s digital launch sales were 56% bigger across Europe than those of Elden Ring. Also, Hogwarts Legacy is, outside of Call of Duty and FIFA, the biggest game launch since 2018’s Red Dead Redemption 2.

The digital data is in. Hogwarts Legacy’s opening week was 56% bigger across Europe than Elden Ring. It’s the biggest game launch outside of FIFA & Call of Duty since Red Dead Redemption 2.

It backs up the theory that gamers are gravitating towards the big brands at the moment

Dring added that to put the game’s impressive sales in context, Hogwarts Legacy already managed to outsell the best-selling Metroid game in just one week. To date, Metroid Dread is the best-selling game in the series – more than 2.9 million copies of the game were sold as of March 31, 2022.

Impressive data for Hogwarts Legacy indeed. Even more so considering that the game is currently only available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series, while Elden Ring also launches on the last-gen consoles. It will be interesting to see how the title will sell on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and also the Switch as soon as it launches on those platforms as well.

Hogwarts Legacy is available globally now for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Here’s what we wrote about this magical gem in our review:

In terms of story, Hogwarts Legacy also manages to capture the magical feel of Harry Potter. It does it successfully by being set a good century before the events of the novels. We’ll meet a few Weasleys, even a gaunt, to name a few. The only known characters from the other formats you’ll know are the ghosts of Hogwarts, with you crossing with Peeves, chatting with Nearly-Headless Nick (if you’re Gryffindor, I assume other houses will be different) and other longer-term fixtures. Fortunately, and as far as I am, the game manages to forge its path incredibly well, adding in a few canonical elements, such as ancient magic. I’m not at the end, so if it is canon, I’m curious how they explain away the lack of ancient magic in later stories.
