Regardless of whether someone's console of choice is an Xbox Series X/S or an Xbox One, they have plenty of new releases to look forward to. What Xbox Series X games are set to drop in 2021 and beyond? What upcoming games justify keeping the Xbox One around?

Updated July 27, 2021: The Xbox Series X/S still has a long way to go before it peaks, but the console's library is beginning to take shape. With each passing day, new games are announced for both the Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One. Here are the titles that were added to the scheduler over the last week: Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel, GRID Legends, Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality, The Plane Effect, Recompile, Hindsight 20/20: Wrath of the Raakshasa, Tetragon, Lamentum, Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles, Alfonzo's Arctic Adventure, HORROR TALES: The Wine, Goroons, IIN, Assassin's Creed Valhalla: The Siege of Paris, Maneater: Truth Quest.

Although not boasting especially huge AAA titles, July 2021 should satisfy niche audiences. F1 2021 and Samurai Warriors 5 will certainly attract dedicated fanbases, while Microsoft Flight Simulator is a console-seller for plenty of people and only exists due to the power of the Xbox Series X/S. A Plague Tale: Innocence made its Xbox Series X/S debut, while RPG fans should keep an eye out for Cris Tales. Lastly, The Ascent will be instantly available on Xbox Game Pass.

What games will be available to Xbox owners in the heat of summer? Halloween will come early with In Sound Mind, a first-person psychological horror game. A sequel to a tactical RPG that debuted in 1990, King's Bounty 2 should finally be released in August. After a long wait, Psychonauts 2 will make its way to consoles and PC during this month. Sports fans have EA's Madden NFL 22 to look forward to. Those itching for a return to the Viking life can look forward to the release of Assassin's Creed Valhalla's The Siege of Paris DLC. Hades will be debuting on Xbox Game Pass; in fact, this entire month looks set to be amazing for the subscription service.

Currently, September's lineup matches its predecessor in terms of quality, with a number of highly anticipated games scheduled for the month. WRC 10, Tales of Arise, Lost Judgment, Aragami 2, and Life is Strange: True Colorsare all (direct or indirect) follow-ups to great games; in fact, True Colors' Ultimate Edition will even include remastered versions of Life is Strange and Before the Storm. The latter can also be purchased as a collection from September 30. The open-world Sable looks great and Ghostrunner's PC version is a blast, so hopefully the same will hold true for the Xbox Series X/S version. Sports games like NBA 2K22 and FIFA 22 Ultimate Edition will also debut during September 2021.

While there should still be a lot of announcements and scheduling to be done before October, the month already has a few neat offerings. Left 4 Dead fans will want to check out Turtle Rock Studios' Back 4 Blood, which will be available on Xbox Game Pass. Those looking for a retro shooter may want to keep note of Exophobia. Sunshine Manor also looks great. This month, Ubisoft's Far Cry 6 will be taking players to the Caribbean, while Battlefield 2042 will be transporting gamers to the future. Square Enix's Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy could very well be a must-play for superhero fans.

After dominating two generations, Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto 5 will look to do the same with the Xbox Series X/S and PS5. By this point, GTA 5 and GTA Online are inescapable, and Rockstar's juggernaut IP is unlikely to lose steam anytime soon. Although details are still scarce, it should be interesting to see how Rockstar takes advantage of the new console's superior hardware. Forza Horizon 5 will be heading to Mexico, as Playground Games looks to continue the series' brilliant run of games. The year also won't feel complete with Ubisoft releasing a new Just Dance game.

With the shopping season in full swing, players will need to know exactly what is on offer in December. What games could make great gifts for the holiday season? Techland's Dying Light 2: Stay Human will certainly be a contender for the month's most talked-about release. The snowboarding game Shredders is also expected to drop in December, while Halo Infinite's Holiday season release also heavily implies it could be released this month.

Once this month is done, everyone will look back at the previous year to determine the best Xbox Series X/S games of 2021. Will it be Psychonauts 2? Forza Horizon 5? Or, maybe a title that has to be confirmed for 2021?

Rather than repeatedly delaying a game, many studios have taken to announcing a release year and then specifying a date later down the line. Of course, there is also Halo Infinite, a game that has tentatively announced a 2021 Holiday season debut. Naturally, the FPS will dominate the discourse once it is made available. Other major titles like Evil Dead: The Game, Digimon Survive, and Call of Duty: Vanguard are also expected to debut before the end of the year.

The gaming industry never stops. Even with so many titles still to drop in 2021, there are already plenty of huge games tentatively announced for 2022. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Gotham Knights, Hogwarts Legacy, and Gollum are just a few of the games that look set to define the next year. Xbox players can look forward to some major console exclusives next year, with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl, Starfield, and Redfall all expected to drop.

"Coming soon" can mean anything from a few months to a couple of years. Beyond Good and Evil 2, Diablo 4, Dragon Age 4, and Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 are all in development, but players will have to wait patiently to learn when these games will be made available to play. Projects like the new Bungie IP are still a long way off from becoming a reality; however, at least the studios have confirmed they are working on them.

Just because a project has not been officially announced doesn't mean it cannot be discussed. Some rumored games, such as Forza Horizon 5 and Grand Theft Auto 6, should happen sooner or later. Other titles, such as Alan Wake 2, come with a healthy dose of wishful thinking.
