Pokemon GO has been teasing a new era of Mega Evolutions for a while now and it seems like the wait is finally over. Although many players were predicting this new content would be arriving later in September, it seems like Professor Willow is ahead of schedule and is already handing out a new Special Research storyline featuring a brand new item that begins to introduce how Mega Evolutions will work in the mobile AR game.

Many little details about how Mega Evolutions will work have been leaked in the last week or two thanks to some big data mine reveals, but now the actual content is live in the game. Players can login and start diving into the new storyline right away by entering the Pokemon GO app and clicking on the glowing notification in the lower right-hand corner. This should bring up the latest message from Professor Willow and unlock the first three tasks of the A Mega Discovery storyline.

Unlike the recent Dragon Week Ultra Reward Special Research, this particular chain is not timed, which means that players can start the tasks now, but don’t have to be in a rush to get things finished. That said, working through the story quickly will get players the items they need to being understanding and unlocking Mega Evolutions in Pokemon GO. Many players are still just working through the first and second steps right now, but information about the third and fourth parts of the chain will be available within hours.

The new trailer teases some very exciting Mega Evolutions that will likely be available in the game in the coming weeks and months and it should be very interesting to see how this new feature shakes things up. Obviously this is brand-new territory for Pokemon GO, so it will take a bit of time for things to shake out and see how this new major mechanic impacts the meta game going forward and how this new resource shakes up the way that players grind through the game. Is it possible that Stardust may finally have new competition for the most valuable resource in the game? TMs and Rare Candy are always exciting, but it seems like Meta Evolution resources could become even more important.

Now that the Special Research event is live, the festivities should give trainers a good reason to continue catching the best Unova Pokemon in the game and getting closer to that complete Pokedex. Check back for more Pokemon GO updates closer to the event. Until then, good luck out there, trainers!

Pokemon GO is available now in select regions on Android and iOS devices.
