Last year managed to see the release of new generation consoles from both Sony and Microsoft with the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, respectively. Many were anticipating that the systems would miss 2020 due to the ongoing COVID pandemic, but both companies pulled it through. As it stands we don’t know numbers of either, but it seems they did very well by all indications, and in the UK they bested their predecessors.

GamesIndustry’s Christopher Dring was following up on comments he made earlier about the Switch’s exceptional sales in the UK for 2020. There he mentioned that he knew the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S outsold the PS4 and Xbox One’s 2013 launch. Unfortunately, no numbers were given to directly compare.

That’s a pretty normal story for the PS5, as its launch seems to be trending up slightly from the PS4, and great news for the Xbox Series X/S as other European countries such as France and Spain have been trending slightly down for the Xbox brand. However, it is worth keeping in mind that both platform holders saw stock issues due to the pandemic, so it’s a hard barometer to gauge one way or another with the circumstances.

More PS5s and Xbox Series consoles were sold compared to PS4s and Xbox Ones over the same period when they launched. It's pretty impressive. Also, Xbox One and PS4 combined have not sold a couple of hundred million
