New Suicide Squad Movie Did Captain Boomerang Dirty, But Kill The Justice League Can Redeem Him

The new Suicide Squad movie has built up a ton of praise, even if some feel the movie is a bit too similar to the 2016 version. Still, it does bring back some familiar faces such as Harley Quinn and Captain Boomerang, and these characters are also set to appear in Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League.

While the new movie is out but the new game is not, there’s something worthwhile in looking at how each treats its characters. DC heroes/villains are super flexible in terms of adaptation, something that can be said of most comic characters. However, while it seems the new movie drops the ball with Captain Boomerang, there’s a good chance Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League won’t. SPOILER WARNING: There are MAJOR spoilers ahead for The Suicide Squad.

While the relationship between the first Suicide Squad movie and this one is left to interpretation, it’s clear through Captain Boomerang and Harley Quinn that the first happened. Not only do they acknowledge each other, but Quinn references her new arrest following Birds of Prey. However, as the movie quickly reveals, they were part of team 1 in The Suicide Squad’s new mission.

Team 1’s goal was revealed to be a distraction, as the military of Corto Maltese tear various members of the Suicide Squad apart. From Mongal to Javelin, there’s an absolute blood bath of a battle where only Rick Flag and Harley Quinn survive. Captain Boomerang, so early on in the movie, dies too. His early death due to a crashed helicopter (thanks to the aforementioned Mongal) means that he wasn’t around enough to get his iconic zingers in. In short, Captain Boomerang got the short end of the stick, but he’ll be rejoining Deadshot and Harley Quinn, as well as joining King Shark, in Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League.

Thus far, not too much is known about Rocksteady’s new game, but it seems like a safe bet that Captain Boomerang doesn’t die in the first showdown. Otherwise, the game may be something completely different than it advertised. For example, while there is only one Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League trailer out, Captain Boomerang plays a prominent part in it as he yells about his concussion, flips off Deadshot, joins in on mocking him for saying he never misses, and more. He even gets the last lines in the trailer by asking who they’re killing and criticizing King Shark…after it's his boomerang that hits Superman in the back of the head.

Jai Courtney’s depiction of Captain Boomerang in both movies was spot-on, but it seems likely that Rocksteady’s vision for the character may be a bit longer lasting. While juggling a narrative based on four characters can be difficult, the way Captain Boomerang and his Suicide Squad fellows-in-arms interact will go a long way, giving him every change for the Zinger he need.

In gameplay, at least based on this trailer, it seems he won’t be cast aside for more popular characters either. His pistol gunplay, as well as being able to teleport with his boomerang, makes for an interesting combination, meaning he’ll go tit for tat against Deadshot, Harley Quinn, and King Shark. He’ll, at the very least, get more screen time than The Suicide Squad’s Captain Boomerang, and that’s really all he needs to shine.
