Neil Gaiman Teases Intense Sandman Episode 5 on Netflix

Author of the original Sandman comic book/graphic novel series and executive producer of the upcoming television adaptation of the same name, Neil Gaiman, has expressed his excitement for the upcoming fifth episode of the Netflix adaptation of the popular books. Sandman is a horror-esque series published by DC Comics as part of its DC Black Label/Vertigo line.

The Sandman adaptation has wrapped filming, as noted by the creator and executive producer. The official synopsis of the show reads, "In 1916, Dream, the king of stories and one of the seven Endless, is captured in an occult ritual. After being held captive for 105 years, in 2021 he escapes and sets out to restore order to his kingdom of the Dreaming".

The Sandman cast was announced a while back and the roster of performers is very promising. Many fans are excited to see the world come to life and in a behind-the-scenes video released by Netflix, the creator himself was in awe after seeing the set in person. Gaiman's recent tweet about the fifth episode of the Sandman adaptation was prompted by a fan who noted that the audiobook version of Sandman #6 was a traumatizing experience for them. In response, Gaiman noted that the aforementioned episode of the Sandman series will be worse, suggesting David Thewlis' performance as John Dee / Doctor Destiny will only intensify the experience.

Sandman is described as a mind-bending and dark story that will delve into a lot of different themes. The story is hard to describe for new fans, so the Netflix series is aiming to make it more accessible to attract newer audiences to the world. Expect a lot of new fans to be birthed and for veterans to return for its release, similar to what happened with The Witcher's reception.

While the series is technically published by DC Comics, don't expect to see Batman or Superman appear in this series. The Endless have crossed over with other DC properties in the past, but that doesn't mean it will happen here. If there's any hope of attracting fans to the world made by Gaiman, it will have to rely on its story instead of drawing fans in by throwing Bruce Wayne or Clark Kent into it.

Pop Culture is doing a better job of giving its "obscure" properties their own time to shine. Marvel is bringing the Eternals to theaters this November and Shang-Chi to the big screen this Friday. Many forget that heroes like Iron Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy were "B" or "C" tier in comparison to Spider-Man/X-Men prior to their MCU debuts.

Sandman will be released exclusively on Netflix on a yet-to-be-announced date.
