Resident Evil 3 Sells 2.7 Million Units Worldwide, Capcom Says Sales “Have not Especially Deviated” from Expectations

Resident Evil 3

Capcom have revealed that Resident Evil 3 (2020) has sold 2.7 million units worldwide, but the game’s sales “have not especially deviated” from their expectations.

While the game sold over 2 million copies within 5 days of launch, it seems that since then it has sold an additional 700,000. Capcom’s 1st Quarter in FY2020 Presentation of Financial Results have revealed the game selling 2.7 million units worldwide (page 9 of the document, page 10 of the .pdf file).

This pales in comparison to the other launch data of recent Resident Evil titles. Resident Evil 2 (2019) sold 3 million units in its first week, and would go on to sell 4 million a month later and 5 million as of December 11th, 2019. For comparison, Resident Evil 3 (2020) has sold 2.7 million since April 3rd.

Despite this however, this is seemingly within Capcom’s predictions. As noted in the Q&A summery, the sales “have not especially deviated” from the expected sales, in reference to how the original Resident Evil 3: Nemesis sold.

Q. Tell me how Resident Evil 3 has been received, and what pricing strategies there are for the
future.
A. With reference to sales trends for the original Resident Evil 3: Nemesis as well, results have not especially deviated from our internal sales plan. Looking ahead, we will consider pricing strategies targeting the holiday season, starting in autumn and running to the end of the year.

As of 2012, Resident Evil 2 (1998) reportedly sold 4.96 million units, while Resident Evil 3: Nemesis sold 3.5 million units. However, remaking both games should have created more opportunities for both games to be a success.

Possible contributing factors include the coronavirus pandemic (though other titles have seen increased digital sales in exchange), the game using Denuvo DRM on Windows PC, or the game’s luke-warm reception by players [1, 2, 3]. Our own review criticized the game for disappointing fans of the original, and being short while lacking replay value.

Resident Evil 3 is available on Windows PC (via Steam), PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. In case you missed it, you can find our review here.
