Streets of Rage composer Yuzo Koshiro making new shooter for Genesis/Mega Drive

Japanese composer Yuzo Koshiro is teasing the next game from Ancient Corp, the indie developer run by him and his family.

“It looks like an old shoot ’em up but is a new game we’re developing, harkening back to famous franchises in the 80s,” Koshiro said.

He added that the game is beign made for the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive, and that he’s both composer and designer – the first time Yuzo Koshiro designed a game “since Beyond Oasis.

Yuzo Koshiro is known for his iconic work on classic 16-bit games like the Streets of Rage trilogy, ActRaiser, The Revenge of Shinobi, and more. This new shooter will also have music made authentically for the console, with a native YM2612 driver.

“It’s about the first time in 30 years that I’ve worked on MD/Gen since I made all the songs for the Beyond Oasis. Of course, there’s no CD audio streaming,” he said.

He added, “Some people might expect I’m going to make EDM/Dance style music on this, but I definitely will not. There wasn’t like the genre in the era, and I don’t think it matches this game.”

Further details – like an official name or a release date – weren’t confirmed. Koshiro teased that they’ll have to “think of a temporary project name for this one”, suggesting it could be earlier in development.

Ancient Corp’s most recent game is Royal Anapoko Academy, which released for Nintendo Switch back in 2021 for Japan. The most recent game released in the west was Gotta Protectors: Cart of Darkness, which also released for Switch.
