After teasing the announcement this weekend, Ubisoft today revealed XDefiant – a new multiplayer game set in the Tom Clancy universe. Early footage showed off some of the familiar faces and locations you can expect to see during your missions, including characters from Splinter Cell and the post-apocalyptic New York from The Division.
XDefiant is a first-person shooter with a heavy focus on class abilities and frantic, fast-paced shootouts. Gameplay shown off during its reveal indicates you'll have plenty of different strategies to master – whether you're clambering up obstacles for a better vantage point or deploying temporary shields, there seems to be a lot of moving pieces to XDefiant.

Splinter Cell fans might be frustrated that the reveal has little to do with the popular – and long-dormant – franchise, but at least there's a bit of fan service with the inclusion of characters inspired by Third Echelon. As far as XDefiant is concerned, it looks like a fairly standard FPS – although we'll reserve final judgment until we can get our hands on the game. There's still a lot we don't know about the upcoming FPS, but unless it does something unique, it might be hard to stand out from the list of top-tier free-to-play games currently available on the market.
Its faction system and massive arsenal of weapons should give you plenty of ways to customize your play style, and Ubisoft is emphasizing that it is a "shooter first," with a heavy focus on making its gunplay some of the best in the genre.
While XDefiant might be heading the free-to-play route at launch, Ubisoft recently announced that Rainbow Six Siege has no plans to change its purchase model. It recently launched another massive expansion, adding a new Defender to the mix – one that brings a bit more healing power to the team.
As for Rainbow Six Extraction, Ubisoft last week decided to delay its release until 2022.
Between two Rainbow Six games, XDefiant, Hyper Scape, and the upcoming Far Cry, Ubisoft fans will have no shortage of FPS titles to work through over the next year.
