Genshin Impact: 10 Mistakes Players Make When Using Chongyun

In Genshin Impact, Chongyun is an exorcist that hails from Liyue. He has suffered from excessive positive energy since he was young. This causes him to be an amazing exorcist as spirits would flee just because he's nearby. But this also frustrates him because he feels like he's not a proper exorcist. Chongyun thinks a proper exorcist has to do an exorcism to drive spirits away, which is something he has never done.

Chongyun wields the Cryo vision, and his main feature is Cryo-infusion on his skill. His burst has a low energy requirement and can be easily spammed. Chongyun's playstyle is different from most of the claymore users, so players might have made these mistakes when playing him.

Updated on August 1st, 2021, by Scott Vengel: With the release of update 2.0, Genshin Impact has undergone one of the biggest updates in its near year of history. As many new players come, and veterans return, to the Genshin Impact experience with Inazuma's release, it's more pressing than ever to understand the peculiarities of each character. No character has had quite as many needless mistakes as Chongyun, with his unique playstyle and misunderstood role in the game. To help new players dodge some common mistakes with Liyue's top-Cryo claymore user, this list will be expanded to include a few more entries that players may have missed.

14 Building Him as a Physical Damage Dealer

In Genshin Impact, Chongyun is a Cryo claymore character. Electro and Cryo characters are usually favorable to be physically built because it's easy to trigger Superconduct with them. It is a reaction that will reduce the enemy's physical resistance by 40%. This reaction will cause a boost in physical damage against enemies.

Chongyun's main core of damage comes from his Frost Field. This skill infuses sword, claymore, and polearm with Cryo, causing them to deal elemental damage. This infusion will render any physical damage bonus nonexistent, wasting the invested resources.

13 Using His Field to Support Physical Damage Dealers

Chongyun's Frost Field is an accessible way of obtaining Superconduct. But the reaction's main feature is to help increase physical damage, something that his skill gets rid of. For example, players can't use Chongyun to create Superconduct with Razor. The reactions will easily happen, but Razor's weapon will be infused with Cryo so he won't benefit from a physical damage bonus.

However, Chongyun can be used with characters like Fischl. Fischl's Oz will create Superconduct with Chongyun, and since bows do not get Cryo infusion, Fischl can deal higher physical damage.

12 Pairing Him With Other Characters That Infuse Their Weapons

Some characters are able to infuse their weapon with their element. For example, Noelle with Geo, Diluc with Pyro, and Keqing with Electro. Chongyun is not a good pair for most of these characters.

With Noelle, Chongyun's skill will be a waste because it will not perform to its best potential. Conversely, his skill has niche use with Diluc, allowing the latter to easily deal melt with his Pyro attacks. With Keqing, Chongyun will hurt her on any build. If she's an Electro DPS, Chongyun's Frost Field will override her Electro infusion. If she's a physical DPS, it will disable her physical damage as well.

11 Not Pairing Him With Automated Skill Users

For those that insist on using Chongyun as the main Cryo DPS of their Genshin Impact team, this is perhaps the biggest mistake of all. Unlike physical damage dealers, automated skill users benefit from Chongyun's elemental skill. Top automated skill users for Chongyun's team compositions include:

  • Fischl with Oz to apply Electro damage
  • Xiangling summoning Guoba for easy Melt reactions
  • Xingqiu transferring Rain Blades for Freeze reactions

Of course, other characters exist or will be added that work with Chongyun, but these are some of the best. Effectively, by including an automated skill user in a Chongyun team, players can apply two elements with one character.

10 Using His Burst Incorrectly

Enemies can easily overwhelm players in some situations. Combined with players' tendency to burst every time it's ready, this can be disastrous. The terrible auto-aim will cause players to miss at a bad time. It will also ruin possible elemental reactions.

Without aiming, Chongyun's burst will either hit a dying or a single enemy, like the flying Cicins. Although his burst has a nice AOE, aiming is crucial for maximum damage. Therefore, players shouldn't rush in using his burst.

9 Not Pairing Him With A Healer

Granted, it's common sense that most teams should have a healer of some kind in Genshin Impact. However, not pairing Chongyun with a healer is especially hindering. Compared to other supports and sub-DPS's, Chongyun spends a lot of time on the field between his slow claymore movements and peculiar elemental skill.

Lucky for players, there are quite a few clever ways to pair healers with Chongyun. For example, Qiqi and Diona tend to make good partners because of their ability to give a Cryo resonance to the team. On the other hand, Barbara and Bennett make for easy Freeze and Melt reactions respectively.

8 Using Him as a Main DPS

Chongyun's kit is unique and pleasant to use. However, the multipliers of his normal and charged attacks are low. This can cause difficulties for players as the game constantly demands a DPS check, especially in the Spiral Abyss.

However, Chongyun's burst has a good multiplier and has great damage potential, making him highly viable as burst support (or as a sub-DPS.) Other than that, he can also support Cryo units like Kaeya, Rosaria, and even Genshin Impact's newest Cryo user, Ayaka.

7 Using Him Against High Cryo Resistant Enemies

Chongyun can be described as a mage with a claymore. His only source of damage is Cryo, and using him against enemies with high Cryo resistance like Cryo Whopperflower or Cryo Cicin Mage will greatly lower his damage. Cryo attacks will also be useless against enemies that are immune to Cryo, like the Cryo Slimes.

Against these enemies, it is the wisest to swap to another character. Chongyun will need a while to kill them due to the element disadvantage. Having a Pyro character with Chongyun is also recommended to deal Melt reactions.

6 Using Snow-Tombed Starsilver as His Weapon

Even though it is common knowledge that Chongyun is not viable as a physical damage dealer, several people still use Snow-Tombed Starsilver on him. The claymore's passive damage increases if it's triggered upon an enemy affected with Cryo. This might sound perfect for Chongyun, but it's really not.

Although the claymore matches his outfit, it by no means matches Chongyun's playstyle. It is a waste of both Snow-Tombed's and Chongyun's potential. Chongyun will do better with Prototype Archaic or Gacha weapons like Sacrificial or Favonius Greatsword.

5 Not Using The Best Weapons When Possible

Conversely, many players do fail to use the best weapons for Chongyun when they have them. Granted, this doesn't necessarily inflict his playstyle. However, for those looking to maximize Chongyun's damage potential (both alone and with teammates), this can be a real hindrance.

In terms of 5-star weapons that work particularly well with Chongyun, Wolf's Gravestone works well at increasing his base attack. On the other hand, good alternatives include the Sacrificial Greatsword and Prototype Aminus. The former works to increase the use of Chongyun's elemental burst by increasing energy recharge and periodically canceling skill cooldown. The latter works like Wolf's Gravestone for DPS-centric Chongyun builds.

4 Building Wrong Artifacts on Him

Chongyun is best used as burst support. His artifacts have to adjust to players' choice of playstyle. For example, Elemental Mastery will be useless if players are aiming for a Freeze-comp, and 4-Blizzard's Strayer is a poor choice for Melt gameplay.

The best artifacts for him are 4-Noblesse Oblige so he can support his team after using his burst. He can also use 2-Noblesse and 2-Blizzard to further improve his burst damage. If players wish to play him in a Melt-comp, 2-Noblesse and 2-Wanderer's Troupe is a viable choice.

3 Not Building His Talents Correctly

Much like any other character, Chonyun's talents must be prioritized differently depending on the build. Worst comes to worst, building equally among all three never hurts. Nonetheless, prioritizing can make a world of difference in the early game when talent materials are sparse.

For those focusing on DPS, talents should be upgraded equally with priority for Chongyun's burst and normal attack. However, given that Chongyun has more use as a support/sub-DPS, players will find focusing on Chongyun's elemental skill and burst more efficient.

2 Using Him in Co-op Domains

Chongyun's field is both a blessing and a curse. It benefits Chongyun and any Cryo user but hurts everyone else in the process. In co-op, it's mostly a curse.

Using him in co-op will most probably hurt the whole team, especially if the team is filled with physical damage dealers. Furthermore, some domains put Cryo-related reactions at a disadvantage. So players should know how to properly assess Chongyun's compatibility with other characters. If Chongyun seems to hurt more than help, it's better to not use him in co-op.

1 Not Playing Him With Freeze And Shatter

Chongyun's playstyle causes him to always apply Cryo to his enemies. Some players focus on this element alone to play him or add characters like Xiangling or Xinyan to apply Pyro for Melt.

The best playstyle for Chongyun is Freeze because it's trivial for him to trigger. Players can pair him with characters like Barbara, Xingqiu, and Mona for this job. After freezing, Chongyun will be able to create another reaction, "Shatter." This happens when frozen enemies are hit by heavy attacks, which include claymore hits. Freezing is both practical and safe for Chongyun, as enemies won't be able to attack him while frozen.

Is Chongyun Good?

In the end, Chongyun is a good character to have around. Besides the peculiar infusion of his skill, there aren't many reasons to not use Chongyun. Overall, Chongyun is an excellent Cryo applier, whether it be as a sub-DPS or a support. He may not be a main-DPS or physical damage dealer, but with efficient planning, Chongyun can excel in most areas.

Nonetheless, a good character is one where the player enjoys their gameplay. From a gameplay perspective, Chongyun has good (though a little niche) talents and a fun-to-play skillset.
