Gamescom 2021 Opening Night Live showed plenty of new games, but one of the stranger ones is Cult of the Lamb. It is a new game developed by the independent game studio Massive Monster and will be published by Devolver Digital.
Cult of the Lamb was revealed in a new gameplay trailer at Gamescom 2021, which showed the dark experience players can expect from the game. The game is set in a world filled with innocent anthropomorphic animals at the mercy of deadly monsters and cults. At the time of writing, the game has a release window in 2022 and no other launch platforms have been announced yet. The gameplay trailer has two halves to it that show the game's story and main features.

The first half of the trailer for Cult of the Lamb is an animated game cinematic that shows the origin of the titular Lamb, the main character. The trailer starts dark enough, with the Lamb being the latest in a line of sacrifices until a chained entity bestows them with power. Soon the Lamb is freed, takes out their would-be executioners, and rescues the other captives. Then the freed captives start worshipping the Lamb and the character starts their own cult.
The second half of the trailer provides gameplay showing the main features of Cult of the Lamb. Some of the visuals are in a similar vein as games like The Binding of Isaac. Players will apparently lead the Lamb's flock, as the trailer shows the character gathering followers, building a community, and even hosting sermons. Players will be able to interact with their flock in various activities, including singing, chopping down trees, and building homes. The trailer shows they can even receive a type of reward from their flock's prayers.
The combat mixes sword-fighting with unleashing the Lamb's dark powers as the character ventures into five distinct regions as part of a randomly generated game world. Each location will be inhabited by different kinds of monsters to fight, which will provide many opportunities to try out the Lamb's dark powers.
The new gameplay trailer shows that the Lamb will face false prophets within their cult and can rescue potential sacrifices from other cultists to add to the flock. One scene depicts the Lamb facing a rival cult leader who transforms into a terrifying monster with new powers. Players will be able to sacrifice their own cult members in dark rituals to gain similar powers.
Cult of the Lamb releases in 2022 for PC.
