Horizon Forbidden West’s PS4 Version Can’t Be Upgraded to PS5

Horizon Forbidden West Players Will Have to Shell Out $80 to Get Both PS4 & PS5 Versions

Horizon Forbidden West players who have the game on their PS4 will not be able to upgrade to the PS5 should they decided to get the latter console later. This news was confirmed by Sony themselves on their official FAQ page.

To access both the PS4 and PS5 versions of Horizon Forbidden West, you need to purchase the Digital Deluxe, Collector’s, or Regalla Editions.” the page read. “Dual entitlement does not apply to the Standard and Special Editions.”

The Digital Deluxe Edition, for one, can be purchased for $80, while the standard PS4 version only costs $60. Based on Sony’s FAQ page, only those who decide to get the Digital Deluxe Edition—or any of the more expensive physical versions—will be entitled to both the PS4 and PS5 versions of the sequel in one go. The Collector’s Edition is priced at $200, while the Regalla Edition is at $260.

Sadly, the page also confirmed that “there are no plans for an update offer from Standard to Digital Deluxe Edition at this time.” This information, however, seems to be a contradiction to the company’s previous statements concerning Horizon Forbidden West.

The PS5 versions of those games are built from the ground up to take advantage of the PS5 feature set,” Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan previously stated. “And, we have an upgrade path for PS4 users to get the PS5 versions for free. It is about people having a choice.”

Sony’s apparent decision to get rid of the upgrade path for Horizon Forbidden West is inconsistent with what they have done for other big console exclusives that got PS5 improvements. Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut was released with a paid upgrade from PS4 to PS5, which is the same situation for Death Stranding: Director’s Cut once it launches in November.

Horizon Forbidden West’s PS4 version is still playable on the PS5, of course. However, it will reportedly lack any of the features that are exclusive to the newer console.
