Back in August, rumors swirled as to whether or not a Prince of Persia remake was waiting in the wings, following a product listing seen on the site of Guatemalan retailer MAX. According to that listing (which was eventually removed), the game was slated for release on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in November; Kotaku-turned-Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier seemed pretty confident on Twitter that the listing was accurate, telling one nay-sayer that their disbelief in the rumor “wouldn’t age well.”
Fast forward to September 3, when Schreier claimed on his Triple Click podcast that the remake was going to be announced during the Ubisoft Forward presentation, scheduled for September 10. On September 4 his claims were reiterated by VGC, who said they were confirmed by their own Ubisoft sources. However, the first sign of dissent came on September 8, when Daniel Ahmad, Senior Analyst at Niko Partners, told a Twitter user that the original MAX leak “was wrong in terms of platform and date,” and that the game would neither be releasing on Switch nor in November.

Ubisoft Forward aired as planned on September 10 and, what do you know, Ubisoft confirmed that Prince of Persia is, indeed, getting a remake. Following the announcement, Ubisoft France’s Twitter account made a now-deleted tweet that said the game was coming to Switch on January 21, 2021. But, in response to a user who posted a screenshot of that tweet, Ahmad again chimed in to discredit the news, claiming that the game would not be coming to Switch in January. Preorders for the Switch version of the game were available for a short time on its official site, following Ubisoft Forward, and Nintendo Switch was listed as one of the platforms the game will appear on.
Today, the official site for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake makes no mention of Switch, and some are speculating that it may be announced during a partner direct sometime in the near future. Whatever the future of this game, as it stands currently its launch on Switch is far from confirmed and Ubisoft and industry insiders can’t seem to get their stories straight.
