Following the 2016-released live-action Warcraft movie, there wasn’t much of a peep from the powers at be as to whether or not we’d ever get a sequel. Now, we’ve learned a rumor is swirling that a Warcraft 2 sequel movie is in production.
The new rumor comes from tipster Daniel Ritchman (via Movieweb), which notes the Warcraft 2 movie is in production at Legendary Pictures. That’s unfortunately all we have to go on with the rumor for now, but it makes sense considering how popular the Warcraft series remains to this day.
The sequel was reportedly greenlighted because of its success outside the USA, as it mostly underperformed in American cinema with $47.4 million earned but did somewhat better overseas with $391.7 million earned.
Despite the $450 million budget and just barely reaching that target to break even, the movie was mostly well received with user ratings (currently at 76% on Rotten Tomatoes) while critics, as usual, tore the movie to pieces (with a 28% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes).
The director on the original film, Duncan Jones, suggested that he would return to direct a sequel but only if there are “less cooks in the kitchen.” This was likely a nod to the several companies and rights owners that not only held veto-power over the direction of the movie, but also had a say in every part of the production.
