Sony Aims to Sell More PlayStation 5 Units in First Fiscal Year Compared to PS4; Over Seven Million Units

PlayStation 5

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) CEO Jim Ryan has stated that Sony aims to sell over seven million PlayStation 5 units in its first fiscal year.

As a reminder; the console will launch November 12th in the US, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea. For the rest of the world, it will launch November 19th. The PlayStation 5 will cost $499.99, while the Digital Edition will cost $399.99.

In an interview with Korean outlet Naver (Translation: Google Translate via GamesIndustry.biz), Ryan stated his prediction that the console will “sell more in its first fiscal year than [we] sold in the first fiscal year at the time of [the] PS4 launch.”

GamesIndustry.biz calculates that as Sony announced the PlayStation 4 sold seven million units in its first fiscal year (launching mid-November 2013 to April 6th 2014), this means SIE intends to sell over that in a similar period of time.

Bloomberg had previously reported that Sony were allegedly taking a wait-and-see approach to the PlayStation 5’s pricing, according to their sources. This was seemingly motivated by struggling to find parts and a limited production.

These was seemingly alleviated, with Bloomberg later reporting that PlayStation 5 production had reportedly doubled to 10 million. The alleged reason for this was due to the increased demand for gaming due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In September of this year, Bloomberg once again reported from “people familiar with the matter” that Sony’s estimated PlayStation 5 production in this fiscal year will be reduced by 4 million. However, this is now down to around 11 million.

The reason for this was allegedly manufacturing issues yet again, such as production of SOC (System on a Chip) being only 50% of expectations. This was no doubt due to the ongoing ramifications of the coronavirus pandemic and quarantine orders. Sony would later issue a statement on the rumor, flatly denying the current and prior reports by Bloomberg.

The consoles features boast lighting fast loading times thanks to an SSD, the DualSense controller (with haptic feedback, 3D audio, and adaptive triggers), 4K graphics, and backwards compatible with 99% of PlayStation 4 games.

Exclusive titles include Astro’s Playroom, the Demon’s Souls remake, Destruction AllStars, the God of War (2018) sequel, Gran Turismo 7, Horizon: Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Returnal, and Sackboy: A Big Adventure.
