Mundfish’s Atomic Heart has been a rather interesting project to keep an eye on over the years. Rumors pegged it as having trouble with development but the developer re-emerged last year to announce Xbox Series X/S and PS5 versions of the game. DOOM composer Mick Gordon was also confirmed to be on board for the soundtrack.
More details could be in the pipeline though. The game’s Steam page was recently updated to provide more information on the story. As an action RPG, the story is still alternative history and set in the USSR with robots, holograms and the like having been invented. The player will take explore a mysterious facility as a special KGB officer and there will be “huge open-world regions full of lush Soviet nature” to explore.
Other environments include “less spacious territories of the Facility complexes with its secret underground and above-ground labs, bunkers and robotic logistics systems.” Enemies are primarily machines. Despite being designed to aid Soviet citizens in day-to-day living, they also have combat programs for when war breaks out (which spells bad news now that they’re all malfunctioning).
Atomic Heart is currently slated to release on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One and PC. Stay tuned for more updates in the meantime.
