Despite numerous setbacks, Tomb Raider 2 may become a reality within the next few years. Alicia Vikander, star of Roar Uthaug's 2018 film Tomb Raider, expressed excitement over the possibility of a sequel and confirms that a script draft is currently in the works.
Misha Green, showrunner of HBO's Lovecraft Country, is crafting a draft of the hopefully upcoming Tomb Raider 2, according to Vikander. With over a year and a half gone past since the first wheels were put into motion on the project, uncertainty remains on who else might still be involved in the project. Originally, Ben Wheatly (Free Fire) was set as the screenwriter for the film, but he subsequently stepped away from the project. Vikander is excited to work with Green, however, stating that she feels a strong connection with the screenwriter.

Despite the numerous physical vigors and extreme shooting time the first film required, Vikander told Entertainment Weekly that she feels prepared and energized to take on a Tomb Raider sequel. She hopes that the sequel can be as fun as the first film was and feels a certain commitment to creating stories surrounding women like Lara Croft in action-based roles. Shooting will hopefully begin on the film within the next year. "I was like, 'Oh, I'm just now on a Zoom with an extremely talented woman that I think has done some incredible work. It would be so amazing if we get to go and do this very big-ass film together, going to kick some ass in front of the camera and behind the camera, you know?" Vikander said.
Tomb Raider focused on the origin story of Lara Croft loosely based on the 2013 video game resurgence. The film was met with mixed reviews but it was a moderate box office success, a rare occurrence for video game adaptation films. It has not been revealed what a sequel to this film would cover in the Lara Croft story. The film could easily pick up at the ending of the original film or perhaps explore a new adventure altogether. Tomb Raider in itself was a reboot of the 2001 Lara Croft: Tomb Raiderfilm starring Angelina Jolie.
While critically a flop, Jolie's film was loved by audiences, with box office sales running almost exactly the same as the 2018 film at around $274.7 million. The 2001 Tomb Raider film undoubtedly became an instant classic in the realm of video game adaptation movies. However, Vikander offered her own unique take on the character in her 2018 film and hopefully, she can continue to add more to the dynamic Lara Croft in the future.
Tomb Raider 2 is currently in development.
