Amazon’s F2P Shooter Crucible is Shutting Down, Months After Release

Following a shaky launch and a troubled post-launch development cycle, Amazon has announced they’re shutting down Crucible.

Amazon is pulling the plug on the game a month from now, on November 9th. The Relentless Studios-developed team-based shooter was released back in May 2020. Following the closure of the game, their team will then focus on helping to develop Amazon’s ambitious MMO, New World.

“We’ll be discontinuing development on Crucible,” the update states. “We very much appreciate the way that our fans have rallied around our efforts, and we’ve loved seeing your responses to the changes we’ve made over the last few months, but ultimately we didn’t see a healthy, sustainable future ahead of Crucible.”

Crucible was the first major title released from Amazon Game Studios, but unfortunately it had a rocky start and it was hard for it to compete with already established, more reliable team-based shooters like Overwatch and Fortnite. Our review for the game said as much, noting the sparse playerbase, unbalanced characters, among other issues made it hard to recommend.

“Thank you, as always, for being part of our community,” the official statement closes. “This has been a labor of love, and we’re grateful for the time we got to spend on planet Crucible with you.”
