Earlier this year, during the Inside Xbox event, Deep Silver announced a new game called Chorus. Chorus is a next-generation game, and looks to show off the brand new technology of the Xbox Series X and PS5. Its reveal trailer mostly showed cutscenes, but there was also some gameplay thrown in.
Chorus centers on Nara, the focus and hope for a frightening interstellar cult. The trailer makes it clear that the cult’s desires do not align with her own, as Nara escapes and fights back against them using a small starfighter. The gameplay consists of flying around in Nara’s ship, which is also sentient, and fighting the machinations and machines of the cult.

The developers of Chorus have drawn attention to a few different aspects of the game, eager to show off its next-gen prowess. One of the most touted features is Chorus having minimal load screens despite being open world. This is certainly impressive if it is true, but it is not what was shown during the gameplay reveal trailer of Gamescon today. The trailer instead focuses on the gameplay for Chorus, showing high-flying space battle with Nara and her ship cutting down enemies in space and in narrow corridors.
The graphics for the game certainly look solid, and the space combat seems very fast-paced. If the developer’s claims about minimal load times are true, it could hint at smooth gameplay throughout, which is obviously desirable. Apparently, Chorus‘ developers really like working with the Xbox Series X, so it seems likely the game will run smoothly there at least. Any hardware so nice to program for it draws praise should definitely be taken seriously.
The gameplay itself is, as mentioned, swift space fighter combat. This means that most of the game takes place in space, hovering around space stations, or flying inside them. The gameplay looks a bit like Star Fox, with a few bells and whistles added, like an energy form for the ship. Considering Platinum is not bringing Star Fox Zero to the Switch, this may be the closest players get to a new Star Fox game for a while.
The theme of a space heroine fighting against a cult brings Metroid to mind, although Nara seems to be more than a simple human. How many other comparisons to Metroid the game will raise must wait to be seen, and perhaps players will be waiting a long time with Metroid Prime 4 delayed so long.
Chorus is coming in 2021 for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
