505 Games and developer Remedy Entertainment have announced Control Ultimate Edition; and that being the only way to upgrade Control to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
The Ultimate Edition will come with the base games, both expansions (including the upcoming AWE expansion), The Expeditions end game mode, Photo Mode, and all content updates. The release dates of the game’s physical and digital versions are also different, “due to various production reasons related to the global pandemic.”
The announcement also notes that the Ultimate Edition will offer upgrades for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One users to the next generation; PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X respectively. However, it appears this offer will only be made through the Ultimate Edition, with no free upgrade for the standard editions.
“Will Control Ultimate Edition give me access to Control on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5?
We will offer a free next-gen digital upgrade for those who buy Control Ultimate Edition on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. For more information on eligibility, stay tuned to our website and community channels. What if I purchased the original version of Control previously?
The free upgrade path to Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 version of Control is only available for Control Ultimate Edition.”
Both Sony and Microsoft have emphasized that developers and publishers will dictate whether current generation games will be part of their offer to “upgrade” games (known as Smart Delivery on Xbox Series X). This allows players to receive a digital copy of the applicable game they already own, with all progress kept.
This may be the first time we have seen a game charge for upgrading. “Ultimate Edition” is even trending on Twitter as of this time of writing, and it is clear many are not happy. We will keep you informed if any information changes. The game’s Steam page has also updated to only offer the Ultimate Edition.
