The Danganronpa series has a bit of a cult following. The novel-based adventure game is both funny and dark, and uncovering the murder mysteries are a big part of the appeal. The Danganronpa games have been around for a decade now, but they are now disappearing.

Developer Spike Chunsoft recently took over the publishing rights for Danganronpa. The news was something that most fans did not expect, as the games were recently ported to mobile devices and overall doing well. Some fans were concerned that unwanted changes could come to the series, and unfortunately, that seems to be true–at least for now.

Starting immediately, the Danganronpa games will start to be taken off of the PlayStation 4 and PSVita stores. On August 21, Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girl (PS Vita) was be delisted. On September 4, both Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (PS Vita) and Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair (PS Vita) will be taken off the store. And on September 25, Danganronpa v3: Killing Harmony (PlayStation 4 and PS Vita) will be delisted. Games being taken down from stores is not unheard of, as Forza Horizon 3 will be delisted soon, for example, but that doesn’t mean it’s fun for fans.

NIS, who used to handle the franchise, gave the heads up that the delisting would be happening via a Tweet. Currently, the team is working on the Prinny games for Nintendo Switch, a spinoff of the Disgaea games.

Some may wonder why the series is going through this set of changes. Some even believe that Danganronpa v3 ruined the series and now the franchise is on a downward path. But it’s more likely that the series is in fine shape overall, and that Spike Chunsoft is excited to now be publishing the property.

It’s likely that the games are being delisted as a part of Spike Chunsoft taking over the games. Now that the franchise has a new publisher, the old one can no longer receive the profit for the digital sales. It’s likely that Spike Chunsoft will relist the games under its own umbrella at some point. It is also totally possible that many new Danganronpa games are on the way, now with a new team publishing.

Games like Danganronpa are special for having unique stories and gameplay. 12 Minutes, an upcoming murder mystery adventure, is a game that shares characteristics of Danganronpa, but the thing that sets Danganronpa apart is the comedy of the games as well. Hopefully, they will be returning soon.
