Denuvo Anti-Cheat Software Offered to PlayStation 5 Publishers and Developers

Irdeto have announced they will be offering Denuvo anti-cheat software for publishers and developers of PlayStation 5 games.

As stated in the press release (via email), Irdeto state they have joined the PlayStation 5 Toold and Middleware program to offer their anti-cheat technology to publishers and developers making games for PlayStation 5.

The press release also explains how “approximately 70% of their revenue is earned in the first two weeks after the launch of a game.” No doubt an online game full of cheaters on the first day could cause negative PR. It also cites Irdeto’s Global Gaming Survey, wherein 77% of gamers “express being repelled from a game due to cheating occurring.”

Irdeto notes “Denuvo’s technology has no negative impact on in-game performance and its non-intrusive methodology ensures the developer’s workflow is never impacted.” The statement is sure to raise some eyebrows for Denuvo’s critics.

For those unfamiliar, Denuvo anti-piracy DRM has been criticized for allegations of its effectiveness. These include the need for a constant and uninterrupted online connection even on single-player games, and allegations of causing severe performance inhibition.

When it was announced that Doom Eternal would use Denvo anti-cheat software for its multiplayer, id Software soon after had to look into claims of crashes and performance issues. Denuvo was removed just one week after it was introduced. Whether this latest iteration will continue

Titles that have removed Denuvo anti-piracy DRM (albeit some after a year from launch) include Devil May Cry 5, Resident Evil 3, Resident Evil 2, Octopath Traveler, and Sonic Mania. Recent titles to add Denuvo anti-piracy DRM have include Evil Genius 2: World Domination, Persona 5 Strikers, and Deathloop.
