Time flies, and believe it or not Donkey Kong is officially 40. In celebration of the beloved simian’s birthday, Donkey Kong Country artist Steve Mayles, formerly of Rare and currently of Playtonic, has decided to celebrate with some fresh art. Mayles posted the piece to his Twitter page, which you can see below:

The piece is a wonderful nod to the frustrating-yet-exhilarating minecart stages that the DKC games are known for. Mayles has created many characters over the years, including Banjo and Kazooie, Yooka and Laylee, and Dixie Kong. Seeing him return to Donkey Kong Country, even if just for this piece of art, was a real treat and the perfect gift for such a milestone birthday.
