Destiny Lore Shows How Bungie Has Been Building to Savathun

It's clear Bungie has big things in store for Destiny 2's narrative starting with The Witch Queen in February 2022 as players finally face off with the Hive's god of cunning and lies. Savathun is already front and center in the game's current season, Season of the Lost, seeking aid from Queen Mara Sov and the Guardians to free herself of her worm and escape her sister Xivu Arath in exchange for the safe return of Osiris. However, players have been keen to point out Savathun's build-up is years in the making and Bungie was not shy about that inside the game's lore.

A Reddit thread by user TemtemTamerBcamz1 started what became a landslide of lore among Destiny 2 players after pointing out dialogue from the Presage mission in Season of the Chosen. They point to dialogue Savathun-Osiris shared with the Cabal Empress Caital after the latter asks about "voices" they heard during the mission. Savathun-Osiris responds by saying "he" heard "the ignorance of my youth, the pain of change, unproven faith wilted by logic."

TemtemTamerBcamz1 points out how the line seems to imply regret by Savathun over the deal she made, along with her siblings Oryx and Xivu Arath, with the worm gods for immortality and the Hive. Other users follow Temtem's line of thought, pointing out more lore across Destiny's seven year history where Savathun questions both the worm gods and the greater Darkness.

It's one of the biggest examples of how far the series has come from a narrative standpoint since the first year of Destiny 1 where the apparent lack of story was one of the biggest criticisms. The seeds for Savathun, specifically, were planted all the way back in The Taken King from the Books of Sorrow grimoire cards exploring Oryx's past as Aurash and his relationship with his sisters. It was clear then Savathun was the most calculating of the three, seeking ways to manipulate her enemies along with her siblings to push her own agenda forward.

That said, it appears the best of Savathun's story is yet to come based on what Bungie teased will be in story with The Witch Queen. Various lore across Season of the Hunt, Season of the Chosen, and Season of the Splicer show Savathun has a keen interest in learning about the Light, the Traveler, Ghosts, and Guardians' connection to all three. Given players will face off with Hive Guardians imbued with Light powers in The Witch Queen, it appears she has learned what she needed to make the Light her own while also leaving behind the Darkness, the worm gods, and her family.

Destiny 2 is currently available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
