We enjoyed Evercade, the portable console that plays all sorts of retro and retro-inspired games, back when it launched last year. For the uninitiated, Evercade is cartridge-based; manufacturer Blaze Entertainment is very proud of Evercade’s positioning as a classic-style console where there are no downloads and an Internet connection is completely unnecessary (outside of firmware updates) to play. As a means of preserving games, Evercade is doing some wonderful work. Collections featuring classics from Namco, Data East, Atari, and many, many other beloved studios and publishers are a big part of Evercade’s software library.
Now, fans can look forward to a dedicated home console version of the handheld dubbed Evercade VS. The system has quite a few differences when compared to the handheld Evercade. First off, it will render its games on-screen at 1080p. Two cartridges can be inserted at once, which means more of the Evercade library can be accessible at once (note, the console works with all previously released Evercade cartridges). Four players can play at once utilizing the new Evercade controller or any controller that can connect via USB. Finally, with built in WiFi support, the console and games alike can both be updated with ease, unlike the Evercade handheld which needs to be connected to a PC for updates.
Alongside the new console, Evercade has also finally announced its first arcade game collections, which many fans have been curious about for quite a while. There are four of these compilations in total:
- Technos Arcade 1
- Data East Arcade 1
- Gaelco Arcade 1
- Atari Arcade 1
If you’re hoping to get your hands on these games and Evercade VS itself, there are options. There are a few different Evercade VS bundles available. There is the Evercade VS Starter Pack, Evercade VS Premium Pack, and the deluxe Evercade VS Limited Founder Edition. The Founder Edition boasts an exclusive black version of Evercade VS and comes with a whole bunch of extras. If you’re interested in pre-ordering any of the bundles for yourself, hit up this link starting May 28. Note that the Founder Pack, whose pre-order window starts a day earlier (today!) is limited to 5,000 units and is available exclusively through UK retailer Funstock.
Evercade VS is anticipated to launch November 2021.
