Trailers for Fallout: New Vegas have seemingly been removed or set to private on Bethesda Softworks’ YouTube channel.
Twitter user “Windows 98 Tech Support” (not an actual Microsoft representative) shared the discovery of a Reddit user on r/Fallout. The user had attempted to find trailers for Fallout: New Vegas on the official Bethesda YouTube channel, only to find the trailers were all gone. We have also found this to be the case at this time of writing.
“I was looking for a specific F:NV trailer and I tried to look for it on Bethesda Softworks’ official YouTube channel only to find out there aren’t any F:NV videos on there anymore. And I know it used to have, because I watched them there several times
Out of curiosity, I then checked the old, no longer in use Fallout’s official YouTube channel which also used to have F:NV videos and they’re also not there anymore
There are no longer F:NV videos available on official Bethesda channels. Just your curiosity of the day
EDIT: I thought this could have something to do with Obsidian now being owned by Microsoft, but that doesn’t make sense, because F:NV is still a full Bethesda product, all of its rights still belong to them, Obsidian was just a contractor”
Despite the inconvenience, the user found it “amusing as hell.” Some theorized it may have been due to licencing issues with music used in the trailers. Many of Bethesda’s Fallout videos had been discovered to have been made private.
Fallout and Fallout 2 were made by Interplay Productions and Black Isle Studios respectively. Fallout 3 then took a drastically different approach under Bethesda Game Studios- being a first person shooter with RPG elements rather than a turn-based role-playing game. Fallout 4 had less RPG elements.
Fallout: New Vegas meanwhile was developed by Obsidian Entertainment, formed by key employees of the dissolved Black Isle Studios. While fans have debated whether New Vegas was better than Fallout 3 (some championing it as the best Fallout game), it performed better with players than Fallout 4 and Fallout 76.
Tensions have grown with consumers against Bethesda due to bugs, attempting to bring back paid mods, constantly porting The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, and the sheer bungling of Fallout 76. As such, some began to champion the meme of director and executive producer Todd Howard becoming furiously jealous that gamers liked New Vegas over recent Bethesda titles.
While Obsidian Entertainment have expressed an interest in making more Fallout games (such as a follow-up to Fallout 4), Howard stated in 2018 that it would be unlikely to see a third party working on a Bethesda title in the future.
“I wouldn’t say never,” Howard said. “[But] now that our company is so big, it’s always better to keep stuff internal … It becomes less likely, but I could never say never. I thought the Obsidian guys did a fabulous job.”
