Godfall Fire and Darkness Expansion Making Big Change to Valorplate Ailments

In Counterplay Games' Godfall, players take on the role of Orin, but Orin himself can take on many different forms. Godfall players are able to completely alter Orin's appearance in the game by equipping Valorplates, which are specialized suits of armor that all come with their own perks, stats, and limitations for players to keep in mind. Valorplates are a key component to Godfall, so some may be surprised to learn that the upcoming Fire & Darkness expansion on August 10 isn't adding any new ones to the game. However, there is a good reason for it.

The base game of Godfall already has 12 Valorplates to choose from (all based on the Zodiac), and so instead of adding more to the game, the developers decided to give players more reasons to care about the ones that they already have. The main way the team at Counterplay Games is accomplishing this is through the addition of brand new Valorplate skins that Godfall players will be able to obtain for their collection come August 10.

Besides adding new Valorplate cosmetics to Godfall, Counterplay Games is also revamping the ailment system so that each Valorplate is more distinct from one another. "Many of our Valorplates are themed around an ailment like Ignite, Chill, Shock, and so on. These effects weren't that different from each other, which made the Valorplates feel similar. With the launch of Fire & Darkness our ailments all have unique effects e.g., Chill slows enemies while Bleed increases the damage they take," explained Godfall game director Daniel Nordlander in a recent interview with Game Rant.

"We feel these changes really make your Valorplate choice matter in a way that it never has before and are super excited to see how it allows our players to create exciting new builds as well as visually customize their Valorplates to really make them their own," Nordlander said.

This Valorplate change in Godfall could be a game changer and should definitely go a long way in making the Valorplates feel more distinct from one another. Players may have to put a lot more thought into which Godfall Valorplates they equip before each run, potentially adding a more strategic element to the looter-slasher than there was before. Whether or not it constitutes a truly meaningful change to Godfall's combat remains to be seen, but fans don't have to wait much longer to find out. After all, the Godfall Lightbringer update and the Fire & Darkness expansion are both set to launch on Tuesday August 10.

Besides this Valorplate change, Godfall's new update is also adding matchmaking, which has been one of the most-requested features since launch. Counterplay Games certainly seems to be going all-out with Godfall's Lightbringer update and the Fire & Darkness expansion to draw new players as well as bring back lapsed fans. It will definitely be interesting to see if it all pays off come August 10.

Godfall is out now for PC and PS5 with a PS4 version launching August 10.
