Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto Online is almost seven years old and two console generations old at this point. Nevertheless, support for it will continue with a release in 2021 for Xbox Series and PS5. Along with releasing a standalone version of GTA Online (which will be free to PlayStation Plus players for a limited time), there will also be exclusive content for next-gen platforms and PC.
As Take Two Interactive noted in its recent financial report (via BusinessWire), “For the Grand Theft Auto Online community, the journey will continue on next generation with more new updates, including additional content exclusive to the new consoles and PC.” What this exclusive content will be remains to be seen. But with Grand Theft Auto 5 having sold over 135 million units till date, it’s not surprising that Rockstar wants to continue supporting its online base.
Interestingly, nothing has been said about Red Dead Online, the multiplayer component for Red Dead Redemption 2, coming to next-gen platforms. The open world title recently received The Naturalist, a new Frontier Pursuit, in a big new update and has sold 32 million units since launch. We’ll just have to wait for more information in the coming year.
