Digital media has its pros and cons. While owning media digitally means you don’t have to worry about physical space and that you can download and delete it at a whim, it also means that it could just as easily disappear without you being able to do anything about it. When it comes to games, there are a number of reasons your costly investment could disappear from the interwebs; the most common one being developers taking games off digital shelves because of copyright issues.
While the conversation around digital media preservation is a long and winded one, Hideo Kojima has given his verdict on it. As spotted by GameRant, the director recently tweeted about purchasing a Tangerine Dream box set. He said that whenever he thinks about CDs eventually fading away, he purchases a few.

This clearly sent Kojima down a spiral, because exactly ten minutes later, he tweeted again complaining about the downside of digital media. “Eventually, even digital data will no longer be owned by individuals on their own initiative. Whenever there is a major change or accident in the world, in a country, in a government, in an idea, in a trend, access to it may suddenly be cut off,” he said. “We will not be able to freely access the movies, books, and music that we have loved. I would be a have-not. That's what I'm afraid of. This is not greed.”
This isn’t the first time the director has spoken about digital media either. Earlier in July, he tweeted about streaming being more convenient even though he preferred physical media. “One day there will be no more CDs or BDs. That day will come for sure. As a person from the Showa era, I want to physically own the things I like," he wrote on Twitter. "I guess it's because I grew up in a time when there were no goods or information like now.” He also mentioned that it took him a lot of courage to eventually switch to CDs from LPs.
We recently learnt that Kojima’s last game, Death Stranding, sold over 5 million copies on PlayStation 4 and PC.
